  • Cost adjustment excites district

    David Martin, Editor|Mar 11, 2015

During a session that had been described as “a mixed bag” and “disappointing” by local representatives in the Wyoming House, there was one success that is expected to have an impact on local educators. The Wyoming Legislature passed an external cost adjustment for Wyoming school districts, which means an additional $1 million will flow into Sweetwater County School District No. 2. The money will go to boost teacher salaries and help update some of the aging technology across the district. “We’re very excited,” Sandra Bowling, president of...

    David Martin, Editor|Mar 11, 2015

Another legislative session in Cheyenne closed last week, giving Green River’s two representatives from the Wyoming House a chance to reflect on the 2015 session. Rep. John Freeman, D-Green River, said the session was a mixed bag for him. For him, some of the successes coming out of Cheyenne included bills killing the state writing assessment, delaying teacher accountability and allowing students to apply for Hathaway scholarships after they’ve graduated early or received a GED. At the library we believe in encouraging a lifelong joy of reading and learning for all, especially children. We strive to inspire children to explore the world around them. The need that children have to discover is an important step on the journey to higher-level learning. Because children learn through play and discovery we are excited to help by fostering an early learning environment here at the Sweetwater County...

  • Our View: Legislature needs better priorities

    Mar 11, 2015

Another legislative session has wrapped up and while there were some positive aspects to the session, there were some pieces of failed legislation that really shouldn’t have. One of the more disappointing failures involved legislation that would include protections for gay and transgender residents. The bill’s hearing in committee made news when a Republican representative from Cheyenne made disparaging comments about the bill, commenting about the lack of protections for pedophiles and suggesting the bill take effect when Hell freezes over. Th...

  • Remembering 36 years of Arctic Circle

Alexis Mitchell, Green River Historic Preservation Commission|Mar 11, 2015

Since 1979 Arctic Circle has been an important part of the community. “What happens at Arctic Circle…..stays at Arctic Circle.” Edeen Hansen gave this comment to a Facebook post about any employees with memories about Arctic Circle. Within a week, over 100 comments and pictures depicting memories from opening night to the late 80s were posted. Arctic Circle is still one of the favorite fast food joints in Green River. However, before the store was built on the land bought by the company, the soon-to-be-displaced tenants were not as welco...

  • Driving around in my invisible vehicle

    Stephanie Thompson, People Editor|Mar 11, 2015

Lately, I have been starting to wonder if I have an invisible car. You see, it started with one of my coworkers telling me about how many close calls she has had with people running into her when she drives her big, green, pickup truck. It seems like when she is driving that particular truck she almost gets hit, almost like people cannot see her. We started calling that truck the invisible truck. After a couple of close calls with people almost running into me, I started to wonder if I too have...

  • Experiences to make one a cave-dwelling recluse

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Mar 11, 2015

Do you ever have those days? The older I get, the further I distance myself from wanting to be around large groups of humans. Or maybe just most humans in general. I had two instances last week that just made me want to scream. It’s stories like these that really make me want to move to a cave and spend the rest of my days living there with nothing but the necessities. The first was a simple misunderstanding that almost turned into what could have been a scary situation. I had gone to the c...

  • Green River Council should protect city pets

    David Martin, Editor|Mar 11, 2015

I don’t think it’s something I’ll forget anytime soon. Months ago, while driving down Foothill Boulevard in Rock Springs, a pickup truck with a flat bed was puling out of the K-Mart parking lot, onto Foothill Boulevard. That in and of itself isn’t anything unusual, but the “cargo” on that flat bed is what caught my eye. Two medium-sized dogs were riding along on the flat bed, both struggling to maintain their balance as the truck drove over a dip between Foothill and the parking lot. No railing to keep them in, just a basic flat bed with tw...

    David Martin, Editor|Mar 11, 2015

Last Thursday, a gathering of Green River's senior residents were seated at Golden Hour Senior Center's dining hall to hear from the city's new mayor. Mayor Pete Rust spoke to residents about his background and a few of his early ideas. A major point he brought with him to the senior center is the benefits of volunteers bring to the city, saying volunteerism will accomplish goals without spending a lot of money. "One of the greatest assets of this, or any, community is its people," Rust said....

  • A new twist on old scam: Resident reports phony call

    David Martin, Editor|Mar 11, 2015

It was the unusual message that made Don Boyer suspicious. The Green River resident came home to find a recording on his answering machine that would have made many people think twice. The message was from a man claiming to represent the IRS, saying the organization planned to file a suit against Boyer over back taxes he allegedly owed. The message included a number for Boyer to call the man back at, something he never did. “I knew it was a scam,” he said. Boyer said he watched a news report broadcast on television about people receiving simila...

Th...
