  • Graduation isn't that special for some

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|May 27, 2015

It’s that time of year when students graduate after long journeys through either high school or college. It’s an important time as youth start their path into adulthood and a new set of burdens to overcome. A lot of people are excited to graduate and see what the world has in store for them. Some are scared, as they don’t know what to do. I could have cared less either way. While a lot of people were understandably serious about high school graduation day, I was more concerned about havin...

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|May 27, 2015

The Green River High School girl’s soccer team quest for a state title will begin Thursday against Laramie. The second seeded Lady Wolves will take on third-seed Laramie (10-4-2) at 11 a.m. at Rock Springs Junior High School. “I think we need to play more physical,” Wyant said about Thursday’s match. She believes soccer teams in the western portion of the state don’t play as physically as teams in the east. Wyant said the Lady Plainsmen play very fast and physical games, which will force the Lady Wolves to up their game. “We have to match th...

  • Lady Wolves have what it takes to end east streak

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|May 27, 2015

It’s time for the eastern side of the state to have a little trouble at the Wyoming 4A State Girl’s Soccer Tournament. During the past five years, the east has swept the west in the first round of the tournament. If there is a team to break the streak, it will be Green River High School. While the 4A West regular season champs have not played their best soccer of the season the past few weeks, they have the tools to take down Laramie Thursday morning. When they are playing confident, they are a scoring machine capable of ten goals in a heartbea...

  • I may have finally lost my mind

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|May 20, 2015

I’ve been teetering for years on the possibility that one day I might lose my mind. While it may not be of a surprise to anybody who knows me, I think that day has finally taken place. When I made the decision to purchase a paper, I knew it would be a difficult task. And it has been. I’ve been fine with all of the news stuff, but the business part of things has been a lot to learn. There has been billing, postal regulations, picking up the paper from the printer and delivering it and a mul...

  • Wolves shine at regionals

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|May 20, 2015

The Green River High School track team had a plethora of solid finishes at last week’s 4A West Regional meet in Evanston. “We had a successful regional meet, 11 boys and 11 girls qualified for the state meet. That was seven or eight more than we were expecting,” head coach Steve Boyd said. “Tyler Vendetti had prequalified for state in the long jump and didn’t compete this weekend.” Competing in miserable weather; Boyd said it was cold and windy both days. “The weather obviously had an impact on some of the times and distances, but that is n...

  • Settling into a new place in life

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|May 13, 2015

I’m pretty sure that most people who read my column last week were super excited about not having to read my nonsense anymore, especially my long ramblings about my cat and cell phones. Well it turns out this column is going to have a little bit of both. Some may say I’m beating a dead horse, but I guess it’s probably best to write about what I’m comfortable with. I also can write about whatever I want. Someday I might have a newspaper that just caters to stories about cats and the excessi...

  • Ivie named coach

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|May 13, 2015

The search is over for a new head boy’s basketball coach at Green River High School. Sweetwater County School District No. 2 announced last week the hiring of Laurie Ivie, who is currently a language arts teacher at Lincoln Middle School. “I was very excited and completely honored when I was offered the coaching position, and was immediately eager to meet the student athletes, and begin developing a summer program,” Ivie said. She has coached both girls and boys basketball in both Rock Springs and Green River for the past 16 years. “Ivie...

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|May 13, 2015

Over the course of the 2015 season, the Green River High School boy’s soccer team has shown flashes of brilliance and proved they can match up against anyone in the state. The team defeated powerhouse Jackson, and lost a close 2-1 game at home against second-ranked Casper-Natrona. The team once again showed just how good it can be last Friday again against Natrona. The Wolves took a 2-0 lead late into the game thanks to two goals from senior standout Tanner Trumble. Unfortunately, it was not enough as Mustang freshman Danny Diaz scored three t...

The Green River High School track team will start their postseason Friday at the 4A West Regional Track Meet in Evanston. The Wolves will be going into the meet after several days off. The team was supposed to compete Saturday at the Shane Brock Memorial Meet in Lander, but it was cancelled due to a spring snowstorm. • Ladies ready for packed week

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|May 13, 2015

It’s going to be a busy week for the Green River High School soccer team, but that doesn’t bother head coach Tracy Wyant. With three games in three days, Wyant is going to use it as an opportunity to prepare the team for the upcoming 4A West Regional and State Tournament, both in Rock Springs. Green River (10-3-1, 6-0-1 4A West) will travel to meet Kelly Walsh Wednesday, Evanston Thursday, and then conclude the regular season Friday at home against Riverton. Wyant said she’s not worried about her team playing the three games in a row and will...

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|May 13, 2015

The Green River High School varsity soccer teams will wrap up the 2015 regular season Friday against Riverton. Much like I’ve done throughout the school year, I’d like to encourage local residents to cheer the team on as they inch closer to the postseason. The Lady Wolves are getting close to wrapping up a 4A West Conference championship and deserve a large crowd to cheer them on Friday against Riverton. If you haven’t watched them, it’s a treat. They are one of the best offensive teams in the state and when they flip the switch, the goals come...

  • The end of one road and the start of another

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|May 6, 2015

The old saying goes that all good things have to come to an end. Over the past several years, I have loved my job at the Green River Star. It can be safe to say that you’ve found the right profession when you don’t mind coming to work. Do something you love, right? One of my favorite parts of the job has always been my weekly column where I hope I’ve made people laugh, think and even a little mad. So I figure that this column would be the perfect avenue for me to announce that after sever...

In their first matchup of the season against Rock Springs, the Green River High School girls soccer team was able to defeat their rivals by three goals. The second verse was same as the first. The Lady Wolves kept the Sweetwater Cup in their possession with a 4-1 road victory May 1 in Rock Springs. Green River came out of the gates early and got early goals from McKenzie Lucas who scored on a amazing floater and Taylor Stoeger who sent a kick with force to the back of the net. Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|May 6, 2015

Despite a heartbreaking 3-2 loss last Thursday to rival Rock Springs, the Sweetwater Cup belongs to the Green River High School soccer team. After splitting the season series with the Tigers, the Wolves recaptured the cup with a higher number of total goals. Green River won the first game of the series 6-0 last month at home. “We are proud to have the Sweetwater Cup; it was not how we wanted it to go down, but we have regained it,” head coach Chris Bieber said. The Wolves had a 2-1 second half lead last week against Rock Springs, but two lat...

  • A second look at Floyd Mayweather

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Apr 29, 2015

Last month the University of Wyoming basketball team made a thrilling run capturing the Mountain West basketball tournament and qualifying for the NCAA basketball tournament. During the epic stretch, it seemed the State of Wyoming came together in unison to cheer on the Cowboys. When the team played their opening round game against Northern Iowa in the NCAA tournament, it was as if the state stopped for two hours to cheer on the Cowboys. It seemed like the whole morale of the state was cheerful, and everybody came together for a common cause....

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Apr 29, 2015

The Green River High School girl’s soccer team took sole possession of first place in the 4A West with a weekend sweep of Natrona and Kelly Walsh. “These were two tough teams for us to play. For us to come out on top is awesome,” head coach Tracy Wyant said. In their first game of the week Friday, Green River overcame a 1-0 deficit to record a thrilling 3-2 victory and followed that up with a 3-1 win Saturday over Kelly Walsh, another game they trailed 1-0. It took Natrona just one minute to score Friday, but Green River answered back when...

Another week, another solid performance for the Green River High School track team. The Wolves track team put up solid numbers once again at a meet in Star Valley and Tiger Trials in Orem, Utah. The Green River High School boy’s basketball team recently wrapped up their 2014-15 season with a banquet honoring members of the squad. For the second-straight season, the Wolves coaching staff honored a member of the team with the Stan Dodds Award. Senior Tanner Trumble was selected as the 2015 recipient. The award is named after Dodds, who led the school to its first state title in 1965 and is the school’s all time leading scorer. He would later go on to star at the University of Wyoming and lead the team in scoring his senior year with 20....

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Apr 29, 2015

The Green River High School boy’s soccer team showed tremendous resolve last Saturday with a 3-2 home win over Kelly Walsh. The 4A West Conference victory came one day after a tough 2-1 loss to Natrona. The Friday loss against the Mustangs was the first game without five players who were suspended last week for 21 days for unspecified reasons. In the game against Kelly Walsh, it took Green River only about 10 seconds to score when senior Chase Erickson connected with freshman Christian Alatorre for the first goal of the game. After the T...

  • Snowy weather and the idiots it brings

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Apr 22, 2015

I’m currently looking out the window to an intense, yet beautiful spring snow storm. Even living in Wyoming, it amazes me when the spring or early fall snow comes and people suddenly act like Green River is Jamaica and this should never be happening this time of the year. It seems the whole area goes into a panic and nobody is quite sure what to do. It’s Wyoming. It snows pretty much all year long. After a pretty descent winter, everyone had to know this was going to be coming. For all we know after a tame winter, it will probably snow dur...

The Green River High School boy’s soccer made a strong statement last week with a first-place finish at the Pinnacle Soccer Cup. The Wolves won four consecutive games over the two-day tournament and defeated Jackson 2-1 in a thrilling championship game. “I am very proud after this weekend and winning all four games,” head coach Chris Bieber said. “ After picking up 3-1 victories over both Douglas and Star Valley Friday, Green River came out focused and crushed Worland 7-0 in the Gold Bracket semifinals. That set the stage for the finale...
