The Green River Lady Wolves Softball team hosted the Rock Springs Lady Tigers in their final home games of the season on April 15.
They played two back-to-back games, and in the first game Rock Springs got out to an early lead in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs. Green River wasn't able to respond to this early pressure, and Rock Springs continued to build their lead throughout the game. In the end, the Lady Wolves fell to the Lady Tigers and lost the game 0-10 after six innings.
Green River had five players get a hit during the game. Ally White managed to hit a triple, while Izzy Kelley, Kodi Allred, Haidyn Terry, and Cassie Kelley all hit singles. Terry pitched for the team in this game, and gave up 11 hits while earning five strikeouts.
The second game started in a similar fashion, with Rock Springs getting on the board right away with four runs in the top of the first inning. Green River still couldn't find their footing, and after Rock Springs scored another run in the top of the second, the Lady Wolves were trailing 0-5. However, in the bottom of the second, Green River finally started to heat up and put some hits together, leading to an impressive rally of seven runs to take the lead. The game was very back and forth after this, with both teams hitting well. Green River just managed to hold off Rock Springs, and came away with a 12-10 victory after five innings.
The best batter for the Lady Wolves in this game was Chacee Shiner, who got a hit in all four of her at bats, and also batted in three runs for the team. Just behind her was Cassie Kelley, who got three hits and batted in two runs. Allred scored the most runs, crossing the home plate three times, followed by Izzy Kelley and Cassie Kelley, who both scored two runs. The pitcher for this game was Emma Rieck. She gave up nine hits and earned two strikeouts.
Head Coach Mark Hyde felt the girls came out a little flat against Rock Springs and couldn't get their bats going, but he was very pleased with how they bounced back in the second game and won. He said the last few weeks they have been getting runners on base but haven't been able to get them in. They have been working on situational hitting in practice this week to try to get runners in scoring position.
This week, Green River will be headed east for two more conference games. First they will play two games against the Cheyenne South Bison, with the first game starting at 3:30 p.m. Then they will take on the Laramie Plainsmen on Saturday in two more games, with the first game at 10 a.m. Green River is currently in a three-way tie for first place in their conference quadrant with Rock Springs and Laramie. Since Laramie and Cheyenne South are both part of Green River's quad, these games will be very important for their season. Only the first of their games against each team will count for their conference record, so hopefully the team can play well and earn their spot at the top of their quad.
"We have two very big quad games coming up this week," Coach Hyde added. "These games have a big impact on where our seeding will be for regionals and are must-win games. These will be tough games as both teams will be looking for a little revenge on us and are playing for the same good seeding that we are."
