Givens earns all-state honors

Several Green River athletes showed they are among the best in Wyoming at last week’s state indoor track meet in Gillette.

Green River head coach Steve Boyd said many kids on the team improved on times over the weekend and some had personal bests.

Much like she has all season, Josie Givens shined for the Wolves. She earned all-state honors with a second place finish in the 800 meters. Her time of 2:22.20 was just behind first place finisher Sydney Wendt of Campbell County who ran a 2:19.97. She also had a fourth place finish in the 1600 meters.

“She had a great weekend and we are proud of her. She is a hard worker and very deserving,” head coach Boyd said.

Senior Holly Huber was once again strong with a fourth place finish in the 55-meter hurdles. Boyd said Huber ran a great race and just just missed by two hundredths of a second from moving up a place from fourth to third.

“She is stronger outdoors in the longer race and is ahead of where she was last year at this point,” Boyd said.

The girl’s 4x400-meter relay team was also successful with a tenth-place finish. Members of the team were Givens, Huber, Andri Dewey and Sarah Joyner.

On the boy’s side, junior Tyler Vendetti was a top-ten finisher for Green River. He finished seventh in the long jump.

“Tyler jumped well, he is just having trouble getting legal jumps and finding the board. He has had big jumps over 21 feet, but is barely scratching. We will work on that outdoors,” Boyd said.
