Each year, I have the honor of putting together, designing and laying out our Salute to the troops Veterans Day special section. It’s a time-consuming and meticulous task because I don’t want to make any mistakes, which since I am human leaves me a little bit stressed out. I triple check that the names and photos are in the correct order and that everything looks good. I build other tabs throughout the year, but this one is different -- it’s for veterans -- for those who served or are conti...
The Sweetwater County Commission will not support funding the Southwest Wyoming Regional Airport commercial terminal without a guarantee that it will receive federal grant funding. During the Commission meeting Tuesday morning, the Commissioners were split on the issue. A motion was made by Randy Wendling to approve a budget resolution request for $133,333 to pay for the schematics of the project, but it almost died for a lack of a second. Chairman Reid West asked if he could second it, but...

A play based on the Salem witch trials is sure to captivate those who go and see it. The Green River High School theater department is putting on "The Crucible," which was written by Arthur Miller. "The Crucible" is a classic portrait of one man's struggle toward grace, and is set in the scorching context of the 17th-century Salem witch trials. "The Crucible" renders human struggles both internal and external: a community galvanized by fear and suspicion, a wife betrayed by lust, an orphan girl...
It wasn't the ending the Lady Wolves volleyball team wanted. The Lady Wolves, who were ranked No. 2 in the Southwest quadrant, didn't advance to state. During regional play, which took place in Rock Springs, the Lady Wolves took on the Northwest No. 3 seed Riverton and won in four sets, 26-24, 25-14, 17-25, 26-24. This game was the first game for the Lady Wolves on Friday. They advanced in the bracket and had to play Kelly Walsh, the No. 1 seed in the Northwest, later Friday evening. The Lady...
Seventeen Lady Wolves swimmers will travel to Laramie this week for the state competition. Of the 17, 14 qualified for state, while three are going as alternates. Head coach Colleen Seiloff said they didn’t have any additional swimmers qualify for state at the last-chance meet, which took place last Thursday. Seiloff said the last-chance meet was a way for them to pick up more qualifiers, but they didn’t. “For some of them, it’s just like a practice,” Seiloff said. To prepare for state, th...
With nearly 1,400 pumpkins and gourds to choose from, a person is bound to find the perfect one. The Union Congregational Church's pumpkin patch is a busy place with children from both Sweetwater County School District No. 2 and No. 1 visiting almost every day. Thursday was no different with kindergarteners from Monroe Elementary School visiting the pumpkin patch. Church member Pam Kerr said they have all sorts of pumpkins and gourds of all shapes and sizes for residents to buy. Some items...
While many residents lost their homes to the Roosevelt Fire in Sublette and Lincoln counties, one Green River couple was happy their future retirement home was still standing. Jack and Debbie Leathers recently returned to their cabin in the Sargent Subdivision, which is about 3/4 of a mile off Highway 191 near the Hoback Ranches area. As they drove to their cabin, they didn't know what to expect. They had seen photos on webcams close to the home, but seeing it in person is different. All they...
For the first time in history, the Green River High School Marching Band received a superior rating at state. The Wyoming High School Activities Association State Marching Band Festival recently took place and the GRHS band was ready for it. "It's super exciting," GRHS band director Quinn Kalinski said. "This is my first year out of college." For a director who just graduated from college not too long ago, the superior rating was something he wasn't sure was possible this early in his career....

The Lady Wolves volleyball team may have had the home-court advantage, but it wasn’t enough for them to beat Rock Springs or Star Valley this week. On Thursday, the Green River High School Lady Wolves lost to the Rock Springs Lady Tigers in three sets, 27-25, 25-13, 25-17. “We were disappointed,” head coach Rikki Shantz said. Even though the team lost and needed to improve playing together as a team, including passing and defense, the team had its moments. “I saw some great things individually a...
The Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County has made quite the turn around in its finances in one fiscal year. According to Sweetwater County Commissioner John Kolb, who acts as a liaison to MHSC, the audit recently conducted on the hospital came back clean. Kolb said the auditing firm has been the group that has been watching the hospital for years. “Never have they seen a hospital of that size make that big of a turn around in one year,” Kolb said. “They had a clean audit. It’s probabl...
The Southwest Wyoming Regional Airport commercial terminal issue wasn’t even discussed at the Sweetwater County Commissioners meeting. The Commissioners voted to un-table the motion, but the motion died when Commissioners John Kolb, Don Van Matre and Wally Johnson voted not to take it off the table. Commissioners Randy Wendling and Reid West voted in favor of taking it off the table. The issue wasn’t discussed because it wasn’t taken off the table. “I don’t know when and if we will ever deal...
With the General Election approaching, more and more signs seem to be popping up. The signs are all over the place, but I’m not going to complain about the amount of signs there are or the fact that a lot of them are sitting in questionable places. Nope. I’d like to explore what happens to all of those corrugated plastic signs and what one can do with them after the election is over. Now, for some politicians, they keep the signs knowing they may seek re-election in two or four years bec...

"These are all one-day paintings for beginners and up," Thomas...

Harry Potter fans flocked to the Sweetwater County Library for it's annual Harry Potter event. Once children walked through the doors of the library, they were given the Marauder's Map, which showed them what path to take to make it through the library. The children then made their way to the Sorting Hat to determine which house they will be in at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin. What the children didn't know was how they were sorted by...
The Lady Wolves Swimming team brought home another first-place finish this weekend after a meet in Rock Springs. They are familiar with the pool and it's not too far from home. On Saturday, the Lady Wolves came in first out of three teams...

It’s been about one month since a bin fire at the Green River Solid Waste Transfer Station took place and the city isn’t sure when the station will be up and running. Public works director Mark Westenskow said he’s just waiting for the insurance company to process the claim so the building can be repaired. Even though the Green River Fire Department firefighters kept the fire from spreading out of the bin, the heat from the blaze caused interior damage to the transfer station. The facil...
A man who pleaded guilty to making inappropriate videos of women in restrooms, at their homes or at public events, will serve more than a decade in prison. Ryan Michael Flaten, 28, Green River, appeared in front of two Third District Court judges on the 45 voyeurism felony charges and two sexual exploitation of children charges. Though the crimes were similar in nature, they were two different case files, which were placed in front of Judge Nena James and Judge Richard Lavery. The case that...
