Team sends 17 to state swim meet

Seventeen Lady Wolves swimmers will travel to Laramie this week for the state competition.

Of the 17, 14 qualified for state, while three are going as alternates. Head coach Colleen Seiloff said they didn’t have any additional swimmers qualify for state at the last-chance meet, which took place last Thursday.

Seiloff said the last-chance meet was a way for them to pick up more qualifiers, but they didn’t.

“For some of them, it’s just like a practice,” Seiloff said.

To prepare for state, the team is actually doing a bit of resting up so they aren’t overly tired for the competition. When they do practice, they are fine tuning their swims and working on race pacing.

Usually, there are a lot of first-time state qualifiers on the team, but a lot of them have already been to state, Seiloff said. She’s hoping there will not be a lot of first-time jitters going on.

“I think everybody’s going there with experience,” she said.

All season long, the team has focused on doing the best they can at each meet. That will not change for state. Seiloff said they know what they need to do and the times will reflect that.

Seiloff knows that without any divers the team is at a disadvantage against bigger teams that have divers, however, the team can make up quite a few points.

“It’s always tough when you go to state and don’t have any divers,” she said.

As for which teams Seiloff thinks will be the biggest competitors, she had four on that list.

“Laramie, obviously has just been at the top all year long,” she said.

Gillette has a strong team and Cheyenne Central’s good too.

“You can’t leave Sheridan out for sure,” Seiloff said.

There are a lot of strong teams and most of them have seniors on the team. As for Green River, they have a mix of seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen.

“We’ve got some young girls, but they’ve got a lot of swimming experience,” she said.

This is the first time girls state swimming has taken place in Laramie.

“That’s going to be a new experience for everybody,” she said.

For a coach who has been proud of how dedicated and hard working her team is, she’s ready for state.

“I’m excited to see what happens when they get to state,” Seiloff said.
