For at least the past five years, Sweetwater County has participated in a nationwide homeless population count to determine just how many homeless people are in the county. The annual Point in Time Count will take place from sundown Jan. 22 to sundown Jan. 23 to gather this information. A power outage shut down Green River High School Friday and students were released early. Around 7:40 a.m., shortly after school started, the power went out. GRHS principal Darren Howard said the main breaker at the high school went bad. He said the main breaker was the original breaker put in when the high school was built in 1997. A 21-year-old man was charged with a felony after he allegedly punched a 15-year-old boy in the face. Chance D. Wood, of Green River, was arraigned in the Third District Court of Judge Nena James for felony child abuse. He pleaded not guilty and a jury trial is set to take place March 4 at 9 a.m. If he is found guilty of the crime, he could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000. Keeping the mind and hands active is something one resident tries to encourage seniors to do through her crafts. On Friday, Mission at Castle Rock Rehabilitation Center and Villa residents were busy painting miniature treasure chests, which were made out of wood. Prior to the Christmas break, the Green River High School boys swim team attended the Rock Springs swim meet and came in first. "The Rock Springs meet was pretty interesting. The sixth penny improvement tax is almost certain be on the 2020 ballot. Both cities, as well as the county’s outlying towns, will need infrastructure improvements beyond what they can provide from their budgets. Not much remains of a trailer that burnt on Dec. 22. All that is left is a hollowed out shell, which once was the home to a family of five.
