GRHS speech team dominates meet

The speech and debate team came home with another first-place finish after this weekend’s tournament.

The Green River High School Speech and Debate team traveled to Star Valley to compete against six other schools, which is one of the team’s smaller competitions.

“Star Valley hosted an excellent tournament and we will be returning to it again,” head coach Carina White said.

Green River came out on top with 150 points, followed by Jackson with 81 points and Riverton with 48 points.

“The team did an excellent job; they rose to my expectations for them and it was such a good tournament for us,” White said. “Our students have an excellent work ethic and they work together and boost each other up.”

Even with this weekend’s great performance, White knows there is always room for improvement.

Those who compete in duet and humor have to memorize their pieces and now that they’ve had a few tournaments to perform them, it’s time to start perfecting them. As for the debaters, they need to work on their arguments and their responses.

“So many students stood out, but I really felt like all of our novice really stepped up as new varsity members and most of them staged this weekend,” white said. “Matthew Pickering continues to win Congress and Mikki Scott has won informative several times now. We have a lot of talent on this team.”

Jackson and Riverton always have strong teams and Riverton consistently dominates the interpretation category.

This weekend, the team will travel to Evanston for another small tournament. About eight schools are supposed to be there. One of those schools in Cheyenne East and they are going to bring their whole team to this one, White said. Rock Springs and Jackson will also be there.

“It is going to be tough competition and since it is smaller the path to final rounds will be more difficult because we will be competing head to head in preliminary rounds against very difficult competitors,” White said.
