GRHS speech team finishes 3rd

The speech team competed against 20 teams this weekend and came in third place.

The Green River High School Speech and Debate team traveled to Cheyenne to compete in Cheyenne East’s tournament.

“This has historically been a difficult tournament as many schools from Colorado attend and this year was no different,” head coach Carina White said. “We competed against 20 schools and about half of those were from large schools out of state including, Denver East.”

First place went to Cheyenne Central, while second place went Denver East, and third place was grabbed by Green River.

This weekend, 41 students attended the tournament. White said they have yet to travel will all 50 students this season.

“We finally had the majority of our students though and it felt much more like a team,” White said. “This weekend allowed them to get some solid ideas of what they need to work on and during practice today we will be making goals for what to work on over Christmas break.”

One area that is standing out for the team this year is the cross examination event. The novice team swept that category this weekend when they took first, second and third place. Two of the varsity members also placed in this event too.

Mikki Scott won informative and she received a bid to National Individual Events Tournament of Champions. It takes two bids to qualify to go. One receives those by placing in final rounds at NIETOC tournaments, Cheyenne East is one of those tournaments.

The team will need to work on its Lincoln Douglas and public forum debate resolutions they will compete in after the break.

“Individual and performative events need to do a lot to be competitive. We have a lot of perfecting we need to accomplish to get them to where they need to be,” White said.

As for the Christmas break, the team has had a lot of alumni reaching out wanting to work with the students. They will plan times to make this happen. The team will take all the help it can get.

“We are struggling to coach students equitably with the lose of our fourth coaching contract this season. We compete in an as many as 14 events at one tournament and almost every student on the team is competing in two or three events,” White said. “We have to have one-on-one time with each of them for each event they compete in. This just hasn’t been possible this year and we have felt like we are two steps back this season. I am hoping as we gain momentum and work to come up with solutions to give time to kids we can work that out.”

The three remaining coaches are staying at the high school Monday through Thursday until about 7 p.m.

“We travel almost every weekend November to March so practicing on weekends or on Fridays isn’t possible,” she said.
