  • Delivery man saves GR home

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 8, 2015

What can Brown do for you? For two Green River residents, they can say a member of the united problem solvers helped save their house. A UPS delivery man’s quick thinking and action are credited in extinguishing a lightning-caused roof fire Monday night. The fire occurred after 7 p.m. when a bolt of lightning struck the peak of the roof at 1725 New Mexico. Mindy Larson, the resident, said she was in the kitchen opening the microwave door when the bolt stuck, momentarily giving a bright illumination to the room. At that moment, she also heard...

According to court documents, Lange was playing pool at the Bare Back Saloon the evening of June 28, 2015 with Stephanie Macy, and her friends Veronica Martinez and Tony Bowen. While the group played pool, Macy, Martinez and Bowen...

  • Rock Springs floods Tuesday afternoon

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 8, 2015

For Julie Porter, the moment the water started flowing through her insurance office was the moment she decided to grab her kids and get out of the building. Porter, an insurance agent, has an office on Broadway in Rock Springs, which was where some of the worst flooding in the city took place Tuesday evening. Mayor Carl Demshar said Broadway, as well as North Front Street and South Front Street, looked like rivers flowing through the downtown portion of the city. As of Wednesday morning, the...

  • Grant could pay for better access

    Lillian Palmer, Staff Writer|Jul 8, 2015

Imagine trying to get from the house, to the grocery store, while being wheelchair-bound and with no vehicle. The short trek from the home, down the street to pick up a prescription and groceries could potentially be a dangerous one. For those living in Rock Butte apartments on Bridger Drive. The sidewalk at the intersection on East Teton Boulevard and Bridger Drive has no wheelchair ramp to use to stay on the sidewalk. Instead, you are forced to drive your wheelchair scooter along the street until the next driveway entrance to the parking lot...

  • Allowing fireworks could work

    Jul 8, 2015

For residents of Rock Springs, it’s so regular they can practically set their watches to it. Almost every year, someone shooting fireworks on White Mountain will catch the brush on fire, which results in an orange glow visible for miles. It spreads across a section of the mountain and leaves behind a large burned spot once the fire is extinguished. It’s been a common occurrence for decades now. In Green River, we’re fortunate not to have had a massive wild land fire resulting from fireworks, but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen....

  • Non-fiction books can be fun for readers

Mary Halterman, Sweetwater County Library System|Jul 8, 2015

When library staff members talk to younger school groups, we often check to see whether they know what “fiction” and “non-fiction” mean. Many kids have figured out that fiction means “fake” and non-fiction means “not fake.” They’ve also recognized what adults may have forgotten after years of reading non-fiction texts for papers and reports: non-fiction can be fun! I’m not saying that if you didn’t think your eighth-grade history textbook was a barrel of laughs, you were missing something. In fact, one author, Steve...

  • Notes from Town Square: The benefits of youth sports

Kevin Sadler, Green River Parks and Recreation|Jul 8, 2015

Sports are an important part of the lives of most children in the United States. Just over 21 million youth between the ages of 6 to 17 play team sports on a regular basis, with another 5 million engaging on an occasional basis, according to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association annual survey of households. One of the first things that come to mind when a young athlete participates in a sport or physical activity is the physical benefits that come from the sport. He or she gains physical strength and endurance, cardiovascular stamina,...

  • Has the magic ended?

    Stephanie Thompson, People Editor|Jul 8, 2015

It seems as though my children go through phases. Some are good; and others I would rather just forget. One phase that will always leave a lasting memory and a spot in my heart is the kissing the boo boo phase. My first son Matthew, who is now 5, went through this phase about a couple of years ago. Now, my youngest son John, who is 3, is going through this phase, or so I thought. It seemed like every time, no matter how big or small the injury, if it is a tiny scratch to a big bruise, John wante...

  • Travelling 1,600 feet below ground

    Olivia Kennah, Staff Writer|Jul 8, 2015

We just kept dropping and dropping and dropping until we were 1,600 feet into the Earth. Tuesday, fellow reporter Lillian Palmer and I went into the TATA Chemicals Green River Facility. In reality, the ride in the shaft lasted about two and a half minutes, but it felt much longer. I could feel the change of pressure in my head and my ears were popping. Adrenaline was running through my body. I was a little nervous, but mainly I was excited for what I was about to experience. We rode down with some miners and it was just another day for them....

  • Supreme Court ruling is only one factor in health insurance decisions

Trudy Lieberman, Rural Health News Service|Jul 8, 2015

At the end of its 2014-15 term the Supreme Court decided that the key component of the Affordable Care Act---the tax subsidies available to help people buy health insurance---would continue in all states. Justices addressed a challenge that the subsidies were legal only in the 17 states that ran their own shopping exchanges and not in the rest that chose to use the marketplaces operated by the federal government. That’s good news for the more than six million Americans whose subsidies were in doubt. The government’s own statistics make...

  • Fires break out July 4th

    Lillian Palmer, Staff Writer|Jul 8, 2015

The fourth was on fire. The fourth of July in Green River was fairly calm this year, compared to Rock Springs. There were five fire calls to the Green River Fire Department over the weekend, starting with a couple on Saturday afternoon around 4 p.m. with a small brush fire at Scott’s Bottom. At 10 p.m., there was a small fire citing on South Hill and on Blue Rim Road in Jamestown; both put out before firefighters arrived at the scene. Even though this year’s number of fire calls in Green River was relatively low in number, it did rise from...

  • Fire department hosts barbecue

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 8, 2015

It was like any other Fourth of July celebration. Children were playing with one another in the parking lot while adults sat in groups and chatted beneath a clear sky. For volunteers with the Green River Fire Department, the yearly gathering is a chance to spend time with family and friends at the fire station, while remaining on-call for the inevitable fireworks-related fire. The firefighters’ gear was already prepared and on their assigned trucks. For added wild land fire protection, Sweetwater County Fire sent a small truck and crew to ass...

A second grocery store was also planned, but it fell through. After years of...

The program kicked off with Zimmerman having the children sing the ABC's song with her. Then, she picked out four books to read to...
