Anyone looking at the Green River during the past week may have questioned if the river needs a new name. Dirt and sediment flowing from the Big Sandy River has caused the river to change color to a more muddy hue. The additional particulates have also affected how water treatment is conducted at the Joint Powers Water Board’s treatment facility. Since November of 2010, children ages birth to five years old had the chance to register for and receive free books from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program, however, due to lack of funding the program may be cut back. Kelly Frink, executive co-director for United Way of Southwest Wyoming, said the program provides one free book, each month to kids birth through five years old who registered for the program in Sweewater, Uinta, Lincoln and Sublette counties. “Once they turn five, they receive a graduation book,” Frink said. Two years ago, the Kellum family shared the story of their daughter Trinity and asked the community for help in purchasing a wheel-chair accessible van. For various reasons, only $2,000 was raised toward the purchase of that van; and as Trinity continues to grow so does the need for that van. A new summer meal program will give kids free meals from Sweetwater County School District No. 2. Linda Martin, food service director for the district, said the district will provide free breakfasts and lunches to any child between ages two and 18 living within Sweetwater County, not just those within the district’s boundaries. Harley Lininger, 76, of Rock Springs passed away May 7, 2015, at Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County. He was a longtime resident of Rock Springs and former resident of Maryville, Mo. He was born on Aug. 19, 1938, in Quitman, Mo., the son of John Austin Lininger and Pearl Iona Parrish Lininger. Lininger attended schools in Quitman, Mo., and graduated in 1957. When we heard that there was talk of changing the Sweetwater County Detention Center’s name we thought, why? The name obviously fits the use of the facility so why change it. Then, we heard a recommendation was made that it be called the Gary Bailiff Detention Center. Once again, the question was why? Yes. The URA focused on design guidelines and reviews for construction within the urban renewal area as well as other planning and revitalization efforts. Residents at the Mission at Castle Rock care facility had a chance to have tea and celebrate an early Mother’s Day with family and friends. Kelly Williams, activity coordinator for the facility said it is their first year hosting a Mother’s Day event. “I didn’t want to do bingo again. I thought a laid-back tea would be nice,” she said. Last Saturday was a great day for local swimming with the Green River Middle School boy’s team capturing a conference title. Green River finished in first place with 244 points. Rawlins was second with 213, Lander was fourth with 179, Pinedale was fifth with 176, Lyman was sixth with a total of 169 points, Big Piney placed seventh with 93 and Riverton was eighth with 22 points. The Green River High School track team will start their postseason Friday at the 4A West Regional Track Meet in Evanston. The Wolves will be going into the meet after several days off. The team was supposed to compete Saturday at the Shane Brock Memorial Meet in Lander, but it was cancelled due to a spring snowstorm. The Green River High School Hall of Fame will induct a new class Sept. 5. The 2015 class will include three individuals and the 1974 to 1977 boys swim teams who captured four consecutive state titles. The three individuals recognized will be Jack Beard, Mark A Hoffman, and Bill Hoyt. Beard was a longtime educator and coached the four consecutive state title swim teams.
