According to Green River Police Chief Tom Jarvie, the department has hosted National Night Out since 2004, though he admits the department hasn’t publicized the event until recently. “We’ve been doing it for quite awhile,” he said. • Playing with Power: A ninja's long journey

    David Martin, Editor|Aug 8, 2018

“Now you’re playing with power!” Nintendo’s marketing in the 80s always focused on power. The company’s magazine was named “Nintendo Power.” Some of the company’s television advertising featured lightning bolts and thunder. The Nintendo Entertainment System being a powerful entertainment tool was an idea the Japanese company pushed heavily on its customers. I bought one of Nintendo’s NES Classic Editions a few months back, thinking back to about how, 27 years ago, I would have to wait until afte...

  • Water opens opportunities in Jamestown

    David Martin, Editor|Aug 1, 2018

As Kael Jasperson sees it, a lot of opportunities will open up for the Jamestown-Rio Vista area in the coming years. • Get to know neighbors on National Night Out Aug. 11

Amanda Cavaz, Communications Administrator for the City of Green River|Aug 1, 2018

I’m going to start out with a few rhetorical questions. These may not seem related, but stick with me, it will come together. When was the last time you got together with your neighbors? Do you know them well, or is it more of a quick wave from the driveway? And secondly, are you familiar with the police officers in your community? Do you know what services they provide, how to reach them, and when? These two sets of people make up an important part of our community experience, at an individual level and collectively. Police-community p...

  • Air ambulance companies have grip on customers

Trudy Lieberman, Rural Health News Service|Aug 1, 2018

Two years ago in this space I told the story of a Mississippi woman, Katherine Green, who got caught in the unsavory business practices of the air ambulance industry that has trapped many more Americans since then. Green, a college history professor, chose to fight the company that transported her late husband to a Jackson hospital after he suffered a fatal fall in their home. The ambulance company Rocky Mountain Holdings, a subsidiary of Air Methods, billed her $50,950. Her husband’s insurance company, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of M...

  • Playing with Power: A bout with the world champion

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 18, 2018

“Now you’re playing with power.” I remembered the cheesy slogan from an old Nintendo Entertainment System commercial back from the mid-1980s when I found and bought one of Nintendo’s NES Classic Editions recently. Sure, video games look much better and shinier than they did 30-plus years ago, but I have fond memories sprawled out on the living room floor playing “Super Mario Bros.” and “Donkey Kong.” Decades later, these games still put a smile on my face. As I make my way through the sys...

Director of Public Works Mark Westenskow said the upcoming closure of the Second South underpass is due to the Rock Springs waterline project. • Spirit Ride comes to GR

Amanda Cavaz, Green River Communications Administrator|Jul 11, 2018

There’s a new law in place. As of July 1, Wyoming’s Move Over law has been broadened. Drivers must now move over in the far left lane for maintenance, construction and utilities workers and vehicles, and emergency responders when traveling on Wyoming’s interstates and highways. Hopefully this is something you already do. It’s more than a courtesy. Anyone who has found themselves stranded on the side of a busy interstate knows how dangerous it can be to get out of your vehicle. First responders, tow truck operators, and even good samarit...

  • Combatting those typos

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 11, 2018

Last week, we received an email from Anne Backstrom of Green River, regarding typos appearing in the newspaper. I thought it is an important topic to address, as I can’t deny there hasn’t been a problem with that occurring. What follows is her email, followed by my response: From Anne Backstrom On the front page of this week’s paper there is an article by the paper’s editor. My question is: who actually edits and proofreads your paper? Each week there are numerous misspellings and word omissio...

  • The firefighters' longest night

It was a scene not unlike any other Independence Day celebration. Grilled meats and soft drinks available to all. Children playing while the adults enjoyed a chance to chat. However, the purpose behind the gathering is what set it apart from every other Fourth of July festivity in Green River. They were firefighters and their families waiting for the inevitable call. The gathering is a tradition for the Green River Fire Department. As residents celebrate congressional approval of the...
