My Thursday afternoon was slightly derailed following what was supposed to be a quick trip to Shopko. Admittedly, the store’s closure wasn’t on my personal radar since writing about it months ago. The large, yellow and black signs with the words “store closing” printed boldly on them never brought me in. I went in because I suddenly needed a flash drive. I didn’t find one, but I ended up walking out with two packages of pens, a 10-piece set of stainless steel cookware and a black backpack I’m su...

It wasn’t the way anyone on the Wolves soccer team wanted to end their State run in Jackson. After two games, the Wolves’ season ended without a win. The Wolves took on Cheyenne East Thursday morning, falling 2-1 to the Thunderbirds. They then took on Kelly Walsh the following day in the consolation bracket. While the Wolves have had some success against the Trojans throughout the season, including a 1-0 win at Regionals a week prior, the Trojans ended the Wolves’ season 2-0. Three Wolves were...

I’ve taken an interest in Dutch oven cooking recently. It’s something I’m not generally familiar with and have absolutely no experience in. Regardless, I’ve found the topic interesting. The idea of using a cast iron oven to make something like chili, a corn bread or cobbler is appealing in that it’s all based on managing heat from the coals around or on top of the oven. There’s no setting it to 375 and just leaving a timer on until the meal is done. It sounds both challenging and fun. I’ve w...
Addiction can be defined as the compulsive repeated use of a drug or substance (such as alcohol) or performance of a behavior (such as gambling). Dependence is different, occurring when repeated use of a drug (such as heroine) results in physical dependence which causes an unpleasant feeling of withdrawal when the drug is stopped. Addiction and dependence can occur separately, although they often run together. At five-years-old, I was a thumb-sucker. I recall not being proud of it as my folks seemed progressively upset about my “addiction.” The...

Head coach Chris Bieber said the Wolves could beat any team they were pitted against at Regionals, and the Wolves proved him right by nearly taking the regional championship. The Wolves started the tournament with a do-or-die game against their rivals from Rock Springs, where a loss would mean the end of the Wolves’ season. The two teams had close games previously, the first being a 2-1 win for the Wolves at home and later a 1-1 tie in Rock Springs. However, the previous meetings between the W...

Did you know that an average South Dakotan male lives to 75 years of age, and the average woman lives to 80? Why is that? Is it because we men are more prone to violent deaths early by going to war, riding motorcycles or driving cars faster? Nah! This accounts for only a small part of the difference. I think more likely it is because men, who are genetically built larger and more muscular, likely in order to be the defender or hunter for the family, no longer need to use those muscles in this modern world. Just look at most 22-year-old men,...
The week wasn’t kind to the Green River High School boys soccer team. The boys found their groove the following day against Natrona however, earning a much needed 5-1 victory. According to head boys soccer coach Chris Bieber, the...

One city resident’s work at clearing snow and ice along a portion of Flaming Gorge Way was recently recognized by the Green River City Council. Slaton would work on breaking ice for the entire block. He said...
Sitting at Rocky Mountain Power’s presentation last week, there was something missing at the meeting. Representatives from the Rock Springs municipal government were in attendance, as were representatives from Sweetwater County and state offices. A few legislators were present as well, with Rep. John Freeman, D-Green River; Rep. Clark Stith, R-Rock Springs; and Sen. Tom James, R-Rock Springs, showing up. What surprised me was the lack of representation from Green River. No one from the Green R...
How an early retirement of two units at the Jim Bridger Power Plant will impact the county’s valuation remains to be seen, but Sweetwater County Assessor Dave Divis said the valuation of the plant itself may change. Two of the units are at the Jim Bridger plant, while the other t...
