  • Understanding the two sides of hockey

    David Martin, Editor|Dec 31, 2014

After watching my first live hockey match, I came away with the opinion that hockey is equal parts grace and violence. I date a woman whose family is very much into hockey. Earlier this year, I spent a few hours with her father watching a Stanley Cup playoff game at a Utah sports bar as we waited for a plane with my girlfriend, her sister and her mother onboard. Not long after that, a game of Settlers of Catan I played with her brother and cousin was interrupted as a Stanley Cup Finals matchup...

  • Coyote hunting for the first-time hunter

    Fred Uhrich, Columnist|Dec 31, 2014

I am not a professional coyote hunter, nor an expert caller. What follows will help someone new get started if they should choose so. Coyote hunting is a way to extend your hunting season and assist with conservation. For some that have gained the experience and passion, it is an additional income. But it is the challenge of hunting the hunter that brings hunters to this sport. The easiest way to start is to go with someone that knows how to hunt coyotes. If you don’t have someone that is experienced, you can buy a how-to-call DVD, some even c...

  • Ice fishing: tip-ups versus fishing poles

    Fred Uhrich, Columnist|Dec 31, 2014

As I was digging through my gear, getting ready for this season and I have come to a conclusion that I am a hoarder. I noticed I have about nine tip-ups left that I hardly use anymore, unless I am heading over South Pass to fish Boysen or Seminole. Tip-ups have not really changed much in principle since the first wooden Beaver Dams I started using 30-plus years ago. Advancements are now that they are made of plastic and stainless steel. With sealed bearings, non-freezing lubricants, and telescoping flags, they are effective. I really like the r...

  • Sweetwater County libraries are full of magic

Lindsey Travis, Sweetwater County Library System|Dec 31, 2014

So I’ve been watching the new television show “The Librarians.” Being someone who works at the library, the title intrigued me -- and the show didn’t disappoint. “The Librarians” revolves around a group of people who work for the library, a mysterious place designed to protect all of the magical artifacts of the world. The librarians battle an evil group that wants to destroy the library and use the artifacts for evil instead of for good. Basically, the librarians are super geniuses who, armed with all the knowledge of the library, help mankin...

  • Letter blasts EPA's carbon plan

    David Martin, Editor|Dec 17, 2014

A letter to the EPA from Sweetwater County blasts the agency for its regional haze policy, claiming action from the EPA has the potential to close the Jim Bridger Power Plant. The letter, addressed Nov. 25 from Sweetwater County Commissioner Wally Johnson, claims five Wyoming power plants, including the Jim Bridger plant, would need to close for Wyoming to meet the EPA's 19 percent reduction in 2012 carbon dioxide emissions by 2030. Mark Kot, Public Lands Specialist for Sweetwater County, said...

  • Council approves range

    David Martin, Editor|Dec 17, 2014

The Green River City Council approved a request for State Lands and Investment Board funding to build a shooting range in the new Green River Police Department building. The request will now go to the Sweetwater County Commissioners for final approval before being sent to the SLIB board. The commissioners and SLIB are needed to approve the request because the range construction utilizes county-wide consensus block grant funding provided by the Wyoming Legislature, which requires the governing...

  • Stream some movies this holiday season

Lindsey Travis, Sweetwater County Library System|Dec 17, 2014

I love a good movie. Dramas, comedies, action movies -- I find them all appealing. There’s not much that I won’t watch. What I don’t like about movies, however, is the cost. Don’t get me wrong, I love to see movies in the theater. I love the big screen, the popcorn, the experience. But I have to be REALLY interested in a movie to see it in the theaters. I like to save money, and it’s always less expensive to wait and see movies on DVD or online. Even before I started working at the library, I would visit the library to check out movies or...

  • Cooking up a Wyoming outdoor feast

    Fred Uhrich, Columnist|Dec 17, 2014

Fishing and hunting are Wyoming’s two main pastimes. After having a successful outing, the number one task is taking care of your game and cooling it down fast. Fishing is easy, depending on what time of the year it is. For the fish you are taking home, place them in a zip-lock bag and put in an ice chest. I prefer to filet my fish, but if you are lucky and catch the big one, grilled fish steaks are great. There are premade sauces and rubs at the store, but don’t be afraid to experiment on your own. Rubs for fish can be as simple as a lig...

  • Santa Claus comes to Green River

    David Martin, Editor|Dec 17, 2014

Despite braving cold temperatures, the expectant smiles beaming off of Green River's children wouldn't fade as they waited for him. It didn't take long before flashing lights heralded his arrival. Riding on the back of a trike, he waved to the boys and girls looking to sit on his lap and talk to him. Accompanied by police cars and the Green River Fire Department's 1946 Le France fire truck, as he has done for many years, Santa Claus arrived in Green River to talk to the city's boys and girls....

Stephanie Thompson and Jack H. Smith, Staff Reporters|Dec 10, 2014

When Rock Springs resident Randal "Doc" Wendling won two seats during the General Election, there was a lot of speculation going on about whether or not he could retain both seats. On Nov. 4, Wendling was elected to the Board of Commissioners of Sweetwater County and the Sweetwater County School District No. 1 Board of Trustees. • To kill or to sterilize

    David Martin, Editor|Dec 10, 2014

During Tuesday night's workshop meeting, the Green River City Council was presented with three possible options it could pursue in dealing with the deer living in the city. One method the city could use involves shooting darts at female deer that have a temporary sterilizing agent loaded onto them. Police Chief and Interim City Administrator Chris Steffen said one of the benefits of darting deer is if the deer are darted twice, it doesn't harm them. Initially, he said deer would need to be shot...

  • Wanted: few good men and women

    David Martin, Editor|Dec 10, 2014

Some enjoy it for the adrenaline rush, while others enjoy doing something to help the community. Regardless of the reason, The Green River Volunteer Fire Department has always attracted gung-ho, community-minded people into its ranks. Currently, they’re seeking a couple more. The department is accepting applications from residents interested in joining the volunteer department and plans to host a basic level firefighter class in February or March. For Assistant Fire Chief Mike Liberty, he initially took the course because he thought it would he...

  • Gift certificates keep money local

    David Martin, Editor|Dec 10, 2014

While many gift givers might be tempted to buy a store-specific gift card or gift certificate for an online app store as a stocking stuffer, the local chambers of commerce are offering a program to keep that holiday gift money within Sweetwater County. The chamber gift certificates have been around for more than 20 years according to Rebecca Eusek, Green River Chamber of Commerce director. The certificates can be used at any business within the county, regardless of if the purchase is made at a small, locally owned business or a national...

    David Martin, Editor|Dec 10, 2014

  • Residents share opinions about deer in Green River

    David Martin, Editor|Dec 10, 2014

People speaking before the Green River City Council about the city’s resident deer herd were just as divided as the results from the city-issued deer survey results. Tuesday night, residents shared opinions ranging from living with the deer to culling and controlling the population in town. One of the residents who has made peace with the deer is Patsy Sorensen, who also sat on the city’s working group focused on the deer. A resident of the city for the past 30 years, Sorensen, like others talking to the council, said they didn’t initi...

  • Tis the season for Christmas programs

    David Martin, Editor|Dec 10, 2014

December is a time for family and friends to get together and for people to get into the holiday spirit. For many young students in Green River, it's also a time where they perform in front of their parents in the many Christmas programs hosted by the schools throughout Sweetwater County School District No. 2. Last week, students from Truman Elementary had their chance to perform at the Green River High School Auditorium. While their schoolmates performed on state, other classes spent their...

  • County steps up lobbying for industrial complex

    David Martin, Editor|Dec 3, 2014

Sweetwater County's efforts to attract a large-scale industrial complex continue as state officials visit with some of the Sweetwater County Commissioners. The complex, which is little more than an idea at this point, is based on a massive industrial complex in Alberta, Canada known as the Heartland complex. Legislators from Wyoming, including Representative John Freeman (D-Green River) toured the facility in late February, striking interest amongst lawmakers throughout the state in the...

  • Commissioners raise more salaries

    David Martin, Editor|Dec 3, 2014

The raise boosts the salaries for chief deputies in the county treasurer’s office, county clerk’s office, the clerk of district court’s office and the county assessor’s office. David Martin, Editor|Dec 3, 2014

As was hinted at during a city council meeting last month, the Green River City Council voted to spend $20,000 to help fund the creation and placement of a statue. The statue, titled “Shift Change,” will be placed in the city’s Mining Memorial Park on East Flaming Gorge Way. It was originally created by local artist Bryan Cordova as part of a competition. Cordova was announced the winner during Art on the Green in August and has resulted in the Green River Arts Council conducting a number of fundraising sales and events aimed at paying for t...

  • An ode to the kids dinner table

    David Martin, Editor|Dec 3, 2014

Last week, while sitting down to the annual Thanksgiving feast with my family, I thought about something that hadn’t crossed my mind in the past several years. Many readers may have memories, fond or otherwise, of sitting at the “kids table” during Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners. The smaller table, sometimes a rarely used card table from the basement, where the family members under a certain age were segregated to at while the adults enjoyed dinner and pleasant conversation at the large...

  • The joys found through a lifetime of bargain hunting

    Fred Uhrich, Guest Columnist|Dec 3, 2014

I really like shopping and don’t mind working on something to get it going again. Here are a few stories from looking for a good deal. My first bargain came about when I was seven years old. Making a deal, I ran into our house yelling to my mom that I needed a bag of carrots, she hollered back to look in the crisper. Trading a bag of carrots, I now had a red bicycle, what a trade. I was the envy of my little brother and sister. Of course my mother came out to see what all the yelling was about. She made me return the bike, and get the c...

Kathy Wiekhorst, a retired teacher who helped initiate the long-running program, said the idea came about when she and another teacher, Mary Ortega, were talking about their fathers, who had both served dur...
