Commissioners raise more salaries

A round of salary increases within the Sweetwater County government was capped by four increases aimed at four chief deputies at the county offices.

Tuesday, the Sweetwater County Commissioners voted to give those chief deputies a 33 percent wage increase to keep them on par with wage increases approved for elected officials earlier this year. The raise boosts the salaries for chief deputies in the county treasurer’s office, county clerk’s office, the clerk of district court’s office and the county assessor’s office. The raises go into effect Jan. 1 and bring their salaries up to $85,000 a year.

The approval wasn’t unanimous, with Commissioner John Kolb voting against the measure. Also, before approving the measure, commissioners specified the chief deputies will be excluded from bonuses offered to county employees.

According to Sweetwater County Clerk Dale Davis, the last time the chief deputies received a pay increase was 2007, which is when the last pay increases for the county’s elected officials took place as well.

When a pay raise for county officials was approved earlier this year, many of the positions were increased to be in line with the state-mandated $100,000 per year salary cap.
