    David Martin, Editor|Feb 18, 2015

What once was large blocks of ice became works of art depicting cartoon characters, dragons, and even a drum set. Ice carvers from throughout the U.S. came to Green River to take part in the Crystal Classic’s ice carving competitions hosted at Expedition Island. Coming in from as far as Wisconsin and Nevada, a number of carvers said they come to Green River because of its relative closeness to their locations. Marco Villareal, a carver from Las Vegas, said the Crystal Classic is much closer than a majority of carving competitions, which take...

  • Newspapers often give different historical view

    David Martin, Editor|Feb 18, 2015

Look up the date Aug. 15, 1945 in any search engine and one will find a wealth of information about the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II. Look up that week in the Green River Star, and a person will see a side of the conflict that doesn’t appear on Google, Yahoo! or Bing. A big, bold, headline reading “Green River rejoices war ending” spans the top of the page originally published Friday, Aug. 17, 1945. Below that headline are stories about the community’s role in the war, how the city’s residents celebrated the war’s...

  • Flaming Gorge Days burning out?

    David Martin, Editor|Feb 18, 2015

Editor's note: This story was changed to reflect a correction made to a misprinted name. The original story identified Scott Varley as the treasurer for the Flaming Gorge Days Committee but, the actual treasurer is Andrew Varley. The Star apologizes for the error. After losing approximately $53,000 during the 2014 Flaming Gorge Days celebration, the committee in charge of setting up the yearly event is in a position where a similar loss this year could kill the long-running weekend of fun. “If we lose money again, we don’t believe we’ll...

  • Our View: Time to expand festival

    Feb 18, 2015

The Crystal Classic ice festival is getting bigger each year, with more and more people showing up to watch ice carving or participate in the myriad of activities taking place during the festival. With more than 4,000 people showing up this year, as quoted during the Green River City Council meeting Tuesday, the ice festival if handled correctly, can continue to grow. However, one major question arises if the event continues to grow and this is where it can grow to. If the ice festival continues to grow, one place the festival could, and...

  • Letter: Vaccines can cause harm

    Feb 18, 2015

Dear Editor, Today I would like to comment on your recent article about vaccines as well as ask a few questions. First of all, why are people worried about unvaccinated kids going to school with vaccinated children? They say that these unvaccinated children are a danger to their vaccinated children. That is quite puzzling to me. If they have so much faith in the vaccines, why worry? There is a father of a sickly child from San Diego screaming that this measles outbreak should cause the state of CA to immediately force all unvaccinated children...

  • Be inspired by Shannon Hale March 4

Lindsey Travis, Sweetwater County Library System|Feb 18, 2015

I’ve always wanted to write a book. When I was a teenager, I actually started writing several books, but I never made it too far before I quit. It seemed that I lacked the inspiration to follow through with what I started. I haven’t given up on writing, however. I still love to write, but now I stick to shorter pieces (like newspaper columns!). I would still love to write a book, but I’m waiting for the inspiration to strike me. Perhaps a visit with a bestselling author will do the trick! Young adult author Shannon Hale also felt inspired...

  • The chaos from a cat and a dog

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Feb 18, 2015

This is the story of a cat and a dog. While it certainly has some of those random chaotic moments that seen to happen to me far too often and may show some good in the world, but at its heart it’s just a simple story of man’s best friend and his natural enemy. A few months ago my mom and stepdad decided to get a puppy. It wasn’t an easy decision after their two beloved Yorkshire Terriers had passed away over the past several years. She was insistent about getting a dog, and he would have...

  • Leggings are definitely not pants

    Stephanie Thompson, People Editor|Feb 18, 2015

In December, a dress code revision the Montana State Legislature was proposing came under attack and made national news. At the time, I didn’t give it much of a second thought. To me, what the legislature was proposing made sense, however, others apparently did not feel the same way. I feel that when you are in that kind of a position, you should dress appropriately. Most of the controversy was aimed at the portions of the dress code where women’s attire was discussed. One of the biggest par...

In a matchup between bitter rivals, the Green River boys and girls basketball teams both engaged in epic wars that were wire-to-wire affairs, with Rock Springs eventually sealing the deal late in both games. While the games were both a little bit tense and the players didn’t have any love lost for each other, it was everything right with a rivalry. The crowd was standing room only. The noise was at times as loud as Wolves Gymnasium...
