Green River Police Department welcomes new K9

The Green River Police Department is welcoming a new member, with K9 Salem joining the team.

Salem is "a determined and energetic black Labrador retriever with a big heart and an even bigger nose for the job," the GRPD said in a press release.

Born on September 5, 2023, in the Czech Republic, Salem recently completed an intensive two-week training program with K9 Working Dogs International, the GRPD explained. Salem earned certifications in both human tracking/trailing and narcotics detection. She is trained to detect fentanyl, psilocybin, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, PCP, marijuana and LSD.

"Her scent work is second to none," the press release said.

Salem has already been deployed 14 times since arriving, proving herself to be a fast learner and valuable addition to the team, according to the GRPD. She is now partnered with Officer Sven Pickens.

"While Salem is all business on the job-focused, determined, and eager to work-she's also full of personality," the GRPD said. "She's playful and energetic, with a serious love for her ball (her favorite reward). She enjoys swimming any chance she gets and has a soft, affectionate side-often resting her head on Officer Pickens' shoulder during quiet moments in the patrol vehicle."

Salem is now the second K9 officer in the Green River Police Department, joining K9 Therapy Buddy, who is also a black Laborador retriever. Buddy works with Detective Martha Holzgrafe working with juveniles.

The GRPD hopes the community will give a warm welcome to K9 Officer Salem as she embarks on her journey with the department.

"We're honored to have her on our team, working to keep our community safe," the department said. "She's ready to serve, protect, and leave her paw-sitive mark on the community!"
