Wolves Wrestlers are 3A West Regional Champs

The Green River Wolves Boys Wrestling team showed why they were one of the favorites going into regionals, with a strong performance winning them the 3A Regional Wrestling Tournament. The team's score was 233.5 points ahead of second-place-finisher Evanston, the team that hosted regionals.

Cody, another favorite, finished in third place with 194.0 points. The other teams participating were Powell in fourth, Pinedale in fifth, Lyman in sixth, Mountain View in seventh and Riverton in eighth in the very strong 3A West division.

Green River's Head Wrestling Coach Josh Wisniewski exclaimed that he was "very happy with how we wrestled at Regionals."

He went on to observe that "the team has been very focused and driven."

The Wolves had five Regional Champions in Lucas Todd at 106 pounds, Axel MacKinnon at 120 pounds, Ryker Mele at 126 pounds, Kale Knezovich at 138 pounds and Thomas Dalton at 145 pounds. Coach Wisniewski pointed out that Dalton, a senior, won his fourth regional title, "which is a great accomplishment."

In Regionals, each team is allowed to enter two wrestlers in each of the 14 weight classes. Green River had two wrestlers in all but three weight classes, and out of those 25 wrestlers at regionals, 22 qualified for the trip to the State Championships.

While the boys were crowned 3A West Regional Champions, Head Wrestling Coach Josh Wisnewski also took home top honors as he was voted 3A Coach of the year.

Wisnewski is looking forward to State for both the girls and the boys, and is confident they will be giving it their all in practice this week.

The State Championships for the boys will be this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24 and 25, at the Wyoming Ford Center in Casper.
