Cross Country girls take home first place at Saratoga

This past Friday the Green River High School’s Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams traveled to Saratoga. They competed in the Shanna Ward Memorial Invitational Cross Country meet at the Saratoga Inn Golf Course against teams from Burns/Pine Bluffs, Cheyenne South, Glenn Rock, Saratoga/Encampment, Rock Springs, Ft. Washakie, Rock River, Wheatland, Torrington, Rawlins, Mountain View, Kelly Walsh, and Manila, Utah.

The boys team finished 5th out of the fifteen schools in the meet. Leading the way for the all Seniors boys team for the Wolves in this meet was Nathan Stevenson who finished third in the field of 75 runners with a time of 17:06.25. Following Stevenson, was Hale Iwen 23rd in 19:05.46, Shay O’Melia 28th in 19:31.87, James Harper 36th in 19:50.87 and Marcos Mandujano 55th in 21:02.9.

The much younger girls team with only one senior, one junior, and three sophomores won the Girls Team title. The girls were led by Isabelle Murdock 7th in 21:51.19, followed by Madison Murdock 10th in 22:13.17, Lily Murdock 11th in 22:18.12, Meeka Iwen 14th in 22:50.81 and Jayleigh Wright 21st in 23.22.25 in the field of 64 runners.

After the meet, Coach Leavitt commented, “The teams competed well, the girls really worked as a team not letting anyone fall behind and finishing strong. This was one of the biggest meets the girls team has won in the last 15 years or so. The girls finished as hard as they could and did not realize they had even won the meet until they announced it after all the races. I do not think they expected to beat teams like Kelly Walsh”.  The Coach went on to say, “Green River had the smallest varsity team but was still able to overcome the bigger teams by working as a team.”

Leavitt felt that Nathan’s race was very impressive. He competed the whole race and was only seconds away from first place. The team had one of their toughest weeks in practice as they increased their overall weekly mileage again.

Next week the teams compete at Evanston on one of the hardest courses in the state. “We are looking forward to running against Evanston!”, Leavitt exclaimed.
