Wolves run well at BYU meet Jan. 19

The Green River Wolves Boys and Girls Indoor Track Team competed in their second indoor track meet of the season at BYU, though their participation was cut short by winter weather and bad travel conditions on the way to Provo, Utah.

The team missed the first day of competition Jan. 18, which included all the field events, including the throws and the jumping events.

The next day, the weather improved and the team’s runners traveled and competed. In a field of 205 runners for the boys mile run, Green River was led by senior Marcos Valerio who finished 25th in a time of 4:52:37, followed by sophomores Caeden Grubb at 160th at 5:43.77, Greg Sherwin 161 in 5:43:81 and Evin Hansen 189th at 6:30.61.

In the girls 60-meter hurdles freshman Lillian Munoz finished 22nd in a field of 50 in 10.79, followed closely by junior Rachel Foster in 10.99 and junior Cayleigh Welch in 48th place in 14.39.

In the girls 60-meter dash, in a field of 140 sprinters, the Lady Wolves were led by freshman Ellie Kettering in 44th place with a time of 8.63, followed by Rachel Foster at 81st in 9.04, with Jimena Campos 107th in 9.43 and Welch 120th in 9.78.

For the boys in the 60-meter dash, Green River was lead by freshman Breydan Moorman in 7.88 in 96th place out of a field of 165 sprinters, followed by Josh Cudney 106th in 8.00, Alex Hlad 145th in 8.35, Domenick Kunkle 152nd in 8.60 and Alex Atkinson 161st in 9.07.

In the girls 400 meters, in a field of 80 runners, Carly Kettering led the way for the girls, taking 25th place in 1:05.37, followed by Munoz in 34th in 1:06.77 and E. Kettering in 1:13.57.

In the 400-meter run for the boys, Hlad led the way finishing 89th in the field of 115 runners with a time of 1:01.53, followed closely by Cudney in 91st place in 1:01.82, with Kunkle taking 107th with a time of 1:07.30 and Jared Westenskow 112th in 1:10.79.

Moving up to the middle distance runs, C. Kettering was the top placer for the girls in the 800-meter run, crossing the line in 37th place with a time of 2:45.95. Madison Yoak took 47th in 2:48.16 and Kaisa Arnell finishing in 59th at 2:54.57.

Top finisher on the day for the Wolves was Marcos Valerio finishing 13th in the field of 125 runners with a fine early season time of 2:08.57. Also for the boys, Grubb took 98th in 2:33.93, followed closely by Sherwin in 106th at 2:36.98, Kaden Gailey in 107th at 2:37.49 and Adam Robinson 113th in 2:42.56 and Hansen 120th in 3:00.02.

In the 200-meter dash, the girls were led by E. Kettering in 58th place in 29.39 in a field of 132 sprinters, followed by C. Kettering 74th in 29.79, with Munoz in 83rd place in 30.21, Foster 95th in 31.22, Campos 108th in 32.34 and Welch 116th in 33.45.

The boys were led by Cudney in the 200 meters as he crossed the line in 105th place in the field of 160 runners. He was followed by Hlad in 136th in 27.69 Kunkle in 147th in 29.05, Atkinson at 148th in 29.23 and Robinson in 155th in 30.27.

Head track coach Dan Hansen was pleased with his team’s performance as a number of the competitors improved their times.
