Lady Wolves fall to Star Valley and Rock Springs, prepare for Regionals

The Green River Lady Wolves Basketball team hosted a conference game against the Star Valley Lady Braves on Thursday, February 22. It was an intense game for Green River as they needed to beat Star Valley to move up the ranks for the 4A West Regional Tournament.

Green River started the game strong, playing with lots of good energy and better defense. During the first quarter, Green River scored nine points to Star Valley's 15. Green River had a promising second quarter, scoring 12 points to Star Valley's seven, and they kept the third quarter close, scoring nine points to Star Valley's 11 points. In the fourth quarter, Green River scored seven points while Star Valley scored 12, which wasn't enough to close the gap on the scoreboard. Green River lost the game with a final score of 37-45.

Addison Demaret led the team with 11 points, eight rebounds and six blocks, along with Madison Moffatt with nine points and five rebounds and Nicole Wilson with six steals.

On Friday, the Lady Wolves took on the Rock Springs Lady Tigers on their home court.

Green River played a good first quarter, scoring six points, but let Rock Springs get the lead with 12 points. Green River came back and outscored Rock Springs in the second quarter, scoring 16 points to Rock Springs' 14. In the third quarter, Green River fell behind, scoring eight points to Rock Springs' 13. During the fourth quarter, both teams were playing strong offense and defense. Green River scored four points to Rock Springs' eight. It was an unfortunate loss for Green River, as they lost the game with a final score of 34-47.

Isabel Vasco led the team with 18 points and six rebounds, along with Wilson with 10 points and five steals and Demaret with eight rebounds.

Head Coach Rick Carroll felt the girls played with more intensity last week and it reflected on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, he said they are still turning the ball over too much and not rebounding very well.

"It comes back to get us," explained Coach Carroll. "Giving up an offensive rebound for us leads to us getting a foul. It puts us in a situation where we gave up a lot of free throws and both Star Valley and Rock Springs shot pretty well."

Star Valley attempted 25 free throw shots and made 18, while Green River attempted eight free throws and made six. Rock Springs attempted 27 free throw shots and made 15, while Green River attempted nine free throw shots and made six.

The Lady Wolves have been preparing for Regionals this week. Cody, Kelly Walsh, Star Valley and Rock Springs have all beat Green River during the regular season. For Green River to have a chance to compete in the State Tournament, they will have to beat one of these teams. Coach Carroll says they are looking at it as an opportunity. He says they need to play their best, take better care of the ball, keep them off the offensive glass and stay out of foul trouble to win.

Green River is hosting the 4A West Regional Tournament that begins today. The tournament will last three days, ending on Saturday. The Lady Wolves will play their first game today against the Kelly Walsh Lady Trojans at 4:30 p.m. If they win their first game, they will play again on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and if they lose the game they will play again on Friday at 10:30 a.m. Come and support the Lady Wolves as they fight for their chance to compete in the 4A State Tournament!
