Track team competes in Laramie and Utah

This past week the Green River High School Indoor Track Team sent their best boys distance runner, Marcos Valerio, south to the regional Utah High School Track Coaches Association Meet in Kearns, Utah, while the rest of the team traveled to the Wyoming High School Open in Laramie to compete against the three Cheyenne teams, as well as Casper, Gillette, Douglas, Western Heritage, Rock Springs and Riverton.

In Utah, Valerio ran well, taking 26th place in the 1,600-meter run in a time of 4:39.12 against a field of 361 runners. Marcos finished one place better in the 3,200 meters, taking 25th in 10:15.24 in a field of more than 100 distance runners.

In Laramie, head track coach Dan Hansen continued to move competitors around in different events in preparation for the upcoming State meet and was pleased with his team’s performance.

For the Lady Wolves, in the 55-meter sprint, Ellie Kettering led the way, taking 24th out of 128 sprinters with a time of 8.12, just off her best of the season time of 8.11. Teammate Cayleigh Welch took 84th, improving her season’s best from 9.26 to 9.04, with Marissa Brauburger finishing 120th in 10.79. The only sprinter in the 200 meters for the girls was Welch, who finished 53rd in the field of 86 in 33.60. The girls had two runners in the 400 meters, out of a field of 37, with Rachel Foster taking 12th at 1:12.57. Right next to her was Madison Yoak in 13th place in 1:12.71.

In the middle distance run Carly Kettering took ninth in the 800 meters against 38 runners, improving on her seasons best by four seconds in 2:41.75. Yoak finished 11th in 2:48.64, with Kaisa Arnell taking 21st at 3:01.03. Arnell came back in the 1,600 meters, taking 11th out of 28 runners lowering her seasons best by a couple of seconds to 6:23.71.

Freshman Lillian Munoz led the charge in the 55-meter hurdles improving to 9.95 on the season by taking ninth in the field of 26 hurdlers, with Welch also improving to 12.69 and finishing 24th.

The girls 4x200-meter relay team consisting of C. Kettering, Munoz, Rachel Foster and anchored by E. Kettering, competing against 13 other teams, took fifth.

In the field events, Welch was 51st in the long jump with E. Kettering taking 10th in the triple jump. The girls had their largest field in the shot put, where they were led by Faith Bartashnick in 20th place in the field of 80 throwers, followed by teammates Alaina Maiers in 26th, Alexis Martin 27th, Cassidy Gomez 30th, Kim Peterson 32nd and Kari Rasmussen 48th.

The boys were led by Tyler Killett in the 55-meter dash, taking 32nd out of 112 sprinters in a season’s best 7.23. He was followed by Breyden Moorman in 43rd place, also with a seasons best of 7.33, while Jared Atkins also hit a season best in 71st at 7.57, followed by Andrew Santhuff in 7.70 and Alex Hlad 106th in 8.79. Killett and Santhuff came back in the 200 meters to take 42nd and 51st respectively out of 77 sprinters. Jarrett Atkins was the the lone runner for the boys in the 400 meters, taking 12th out of 40 runners in 1:00.73.

Hansen was pleased with the season best performances and improvements of many of his competitors.

In the 800 meters, Greg Sherwin led the way for Green River, taking 29th in 2:38.76, with Jared Westenskow placing 38th in 2:59.83. Caeden Grubb led the boys in the 1,600 meters, taking 21st, followed by Kaden Gailey in 34th and Evin Hansen in 38th.

In the 55-meter hurdles, Jarrett Atkins took 16th, while improving his seasons best time by a second and a half.

The boys had some success in the relays as they finished sixth out of 13 teams in the 4x200-meter relay with Domenick Kunkle, Hlad, Moorman and Marcos Molina. The 4x800-meter relay team of Sherwin, Gaileyin, Westenskow and Grubb finished eighth, while the 1,600-meter relay team of Moorman, Hlad, Santhuff and Hansen took fourth.

The boys also had a large contingent of shot putters, led by Jacob Martinez in 20th place in the field of 87 throwers, with a throw of 39.01.50. He was followed by David Martinez in 34th, Tito Mena in 48th, Ty Akorn in 61st and Abraham Hill in 70th. In the boys weight throw, Martinez took second place .

The Wolves next meet is next Friday and Saturday at Weber State.
