Wolves shine at regionals

The Green River High School track team had a plethora of solid finishes at last week’s 4A West Regional meet in Evanston.

“We had a successful regional meet, 11 boys and 11 girls qualified for the state meet. That was seven or eight more than we were expecting,” head coach Steve Boyd said. “Tyler Vendetti had prequalified for state in the long jump and didn’t compete this weekend.”

Competing in miserable weather; Boyd said it was cold and windy both days.

“The weather obviously had an impact on some of the times and distances, but that is not as important now as where you place,” Boyd said. “The top eight placers in individual events and top four relay teams automatically qualify for the state meet.”

Dylan Rust continued one of the best individual seasons in Green River history with first place finishes in the shot put and discus.

It was another strong day in the throwing events for the boy’s team.

Paul Wright finished in fifth, Hayden Love was sixth, and Matt Medina was seventh in the shot put. Wright was sixth and Love was seventh in the discus.

Drew Wilson qualified for state with a seventh-place finish in the triple jump. Trey McGhee is also state bound after finishing eighth in the long jump. Shawn McGuire was eighth in the 800 meters for Green River.

There were plenty of great showings from the GRHS girl’s squad.

Josie Givens was once again strong for Green River, finishing second in the 800 and third in the 1600.

The boy’s 4x800 meter relay team placed fourth. The team members were McGuire, Cole White, Jaryn Johnson and Braden Reichl.

It was another banner day for freshman Andri Dewey who finished second in the 400 meters and fourth in the 200 meters.

She also was the member of two relay teams that qualified for the state tournament this week in Casper.

Emily White was also impressive with a fourth-place finish in the discus and a sixth-place throw in the shot put.

Seniors Holly Huber and Kasey Turnbull had great days as well for the Wolves.

Huber finished third in the 110-meter hurdles and sixth in the 300 meters. Turnbull was third in the 300 meters and fourth in 100 hurdles. The two were also members of the 4x100 meter relay team that finished third and included Dewey and junior Hayley Henderson.

The 4x400 meter relay team of Givens, Cassie Newcomb, Huber and Dewey placed fourth. The 4x800 team of Newcomb, Norrissa Chitica, Kaleigh Allison and Nicole Davis placed fourth.

Newcomb placed eighth in the 800 meters and will also go to the state event this week in Casper.

“We are excited as always for the state meet. It should be fun,” Boyd said.
