Cheeks in the seats: traveling time for GR fans

The games may not have ended in Green River’s favor, but it was a special night Jan. 29 in Wolves Gymnasium.

In a matchup between bitter rivals, the Green River boys and girls basketball teams both engaged in epic wars that were wire-to-wire affairs, with Rock Springs eventually sealing the deal late in both games.

While the games were both a little bit tense and the players didn’t have any love lost for each other, it was everything right with a rivalry.

The crowd was standing room only. The noise was at times as loud as Wolves Gymnasium has been in years. While a majority of the crowd was wearing Green, their were a large contingent of Rock Springs fans who were just as passionate as the home-standing fans.

Tomorrow night the two Green River teams will get another shot at Rock Springs, both hoping they can defeat their rivals for their first conference win of the season.

When the girl’s tip off at 5:30 p.m., it sure would be nice to look into the crowd and see a large and vocal Green River crowd. And hopefully they will be in a fever-pitch by the time the boy’s game tips off shortly after 7 p.m.

While it may not have always been reflected in wins and losses, the two Green River teams play hard, and have played some of their best games this season in front of a large pro-Wolf crowd.

Green River boy’s coach Dan LaRose once told me that in a rivalry game in a packed gym, the energy is up for grabs, and it appeared in the first rivalry matchups that the Wolves seized this energy and put it great use. It was two of the best performances this season. They fed of the energy.

It’s only 15 miles to Rock Springs High School and it would be great to see a ton of green in the stands.

The Green River teams play hard. Sometimes they run into teams that may be a little bit bigger, or have a lot more depth, but they don’t lose because of a lack of effort.

Both games last month could have gone either way.

Hopefully it will be a special night for both Green River teams and they can pick up their first conference victory and enjoy it with their fans while they hush and send the Rock Springs fans home with a frown.

And be sure to get their early if you go. Take the good seats from the Rock Springs fans. They’ll survive setting at the top of their own gym. Go Wolves and see you Thursday.
