While events like the Run with the Horses Marathon and Cajun Shrimp Boil headline the annual River Festival at Expedition Island, the county’s kids had a chance to enjoy festivities as well. Those who found the Cajun shrimp too spicy for their taste buds could still enjoy a spaghetti dinner. While they had a chance to check out cool rides at the nearby car show, kids also had a chance to play at Evers Park and the nearby splash park as their parents watched on. A kids craft tent was set up o...
The front lawn of the Golden Hour Senior Center was filled with seniors looking at the solar eclipse with special glasses. On Monday the center embraced the event by handing out solar eclipse viewing glasses, fact sheets, quizzes and paddles. They also received snacks, which suited the theme, including moon pies, Sun Chips and sun-shaped sugar cookies with an Oreo cookie on it to represent the moon passing in front of the sun. A couple of the seniors were talking about the last time they had...
With only 24 hours to create pieces of 2D and 3D art it's amazing what the artists come up with. For most artists, the annual Art on the Green competition is a time for them to challenge themselves to try new things while under the 24-hour time limit. Green River semi-professional artist Bryant Birch was working on a sketch of a cowboy and his horse. Even though drawing and painting animals in nature isn't anything new to Birch, drawing the cowboy was pushing his limits. "This is the very first...

This program gives child...
Step right up and try to win a prize. During the Golden Hour Senior Center's summer carnival, seniors were encouraged to play as many games as they could to try and win prizes. "What we're trying to do is get them up and moving," executive director Sheela Schermetzler said. She and the other employees felt the summer carnival they were hosting did what they intended it to. "They love this," Schermetzler said. A lot of the senior center visitors have arthritis or rheumatism, which causes them a...

The ride. The sweet solitude a motorcycle gives one as they drive down the road is what drew Roger Robles to the machine. It's just a feeling all bikers get, Robles tried to explain. "Just the freedom of the ride," Robles said. Robles started riding motorcycles on and off when he was young and his dad bought him a Kawasaki in 1973. In 1981, he bought his first Harley Davidson. The first time Robles went to Sturgis was with Jon Fleagle and Wes Bingham in 1984. Over the years, he has attended the...
The Sweetwater County Fair was a great place for kids from throughout the region to enjoy a fun week of excitement. Kids had the opportunity to enter fair-sponsored culinary contests or race around a small track at the Sweetwater Speedway booth. Fair food was also a major attraction, with kids frequently seen walking around with giant...
Having a place to grieve the loss of a child is something a parent felt the Riverview Cemetery needed. Cristy Price of Green River knows all to well how difficult the grieving process can be. Price, the mother of Maicy Braden, 17, who died Oct. 3, 2016, when her vehicle was struck by a semi truck, is trying to raise enough money to purchase an Angel of Hope statue. “Although this has started as a result of Maicy’s accident, the Angel of Hope statue is for all members of our community,” Price said. “The intent is to provide a place for grievin...

The art of making sushi dates back centuries and involves using simple ingredients to create delicious pieces of food. Children visiting the Sweetwater County Library Thursday afternoon had a chance to make their own version of the Japanese delicacy, only replacing fish, rice and seaweed with Rice Krispies, Swedish Fish and Fruit by the Foot strips. Teen librarian Stacey Palmer said the idea came from a post she found on Pinterest, where common candies were used to create sushi. The basic piece...
For the past 20 plus years, Green River has had a pond tour, but some may not know how it really got started. The pond tour started with two families Wiley and the late Toni Morgan, and Lamar and Eileen Greene. With Toni passing away in the Spring, it seemed fitting for the Green River Pond and Garden Tour Committee to designate $1,058 raised through this year's raffle toward the purchase of a tree and plaque in honor of Toni. The plaque and tree will be placed along the Greenbelt. On Saturday,...

Each year, the Sweetwater Board of Cooperative Educational Services offers Summer Programs in both Green River and Rock Springs. The classes fill up fast and this year was no different. This week, children in second through sixth grades in the Hawaiian Vacation class at Lincoln Middle School were busy looking at photos of Hawaii their two teachers, Sheila Syvrud and Nanette McCurdy, brought. The teachers also...
Although the schedule said the residents were going to make firefly glow jars, they didn't seem to mind switching to another project. Heidi Schuh, Mission at Castle Rock Rehabilitation Center activities director and volunteer coordinator, said she had planned on purchasing the items for the craft, but got caught up with other work-related activities. Knowing she still had to provide a craft for the residents, Schuh went into the craft closet to see what she had on hand. She quickly remembered...
