Summer programs keep kids busy

Summer classes help keep children learning, being creative and most of all having fun.

Each year, the Sweetwater Board of Cooperative Educational Services offers Summer Programs in both Green River and Rock Springs. The classes fill up fast and this year was no different.

This week, children in second through sixth grades in the Hawaiian Vacation class at Lincoln Middle School were busy looking at photos of Hawaii their two teachers, Sheila Syvrud and Nanette McCurdy, brought. The teachers also told the students about Hawaii since they had both recently visited the state.

"We try to make these educational and fun," Syvrud said.

To get into the Hawaiian mood, the students were asked to pick out what color of plastic lei they wanted to wear and then wear it.

Next, students went around the room and introduced themselves to each other. Some already knew each other from school, but most had never met.

During each class, Syvrud and McCurdy teach the students how to make fun snacks, how to come up with fun games and how to make learning about a specific topic fun. Syvrud recently retired from teaching, while McCurdy is still a teacher. Both enjoy teaching these kinds of classes in the summer because it is something different than what they normally teach throughout the year and it's fun.

For this class, the students were asked to make snake snacks. They used wooden skewers, strawberries, bananas, Nutella and various nuts and raisins. The teachers cut the skewers in half, while the children wrote their names on the plates.

Once the students had all of their materials, they started to place strawberries and bananas on the skewers to make a snake. They then used the Nutella to stick on nuts or raisins to make the eyes.

Syvrud said she looks through her numerous cookbooks to find snacks the kids can make on their own.

She tries to make sure the snack they make ties in with the topic the class is covering.

She said it takes a lot of work to buy all of the supplies and food needed for the class, but it's worth it. What she likes about the classes is the age ranges. The older ones in the class are happy to help the younger ones complete the projects.

Even though the students enjoy making snacks, the best part is when they get to eat the snacks.
