About five or six years ago, a coworker and I decided we would spend a night in the so-called haunted library, better known as the Sweetwater County Library. I had been thinking about it for a while and decided safety in numbers would be the best way to approach the situation. After getting permission, we started making plans on what we would do in the library. My coworker and I were really good friends and thought it might be an adventure to be there all night. We packed cameras, flashlights,...
With the Sweetwater County Library’s history it’s no wonder why many residents, employees and former employees believe that it is haunted. The library, located at 300 N. 1st East used to be a cemetery, which was established the city in 1892. The site remained a cemetery until 1926, when a federal CWA project moved the bodies and old grave markers to the Riverview Cemetery, which was just up the hill and still remains as the cemetery today. Sweetwater County Library reference librarian Micki Gilmore said when the gravesite were moved cof...

Over the course of two years, I dedicated a large amount of time to reading the complete and unabridged version of Victor Hugo’s “Les Miserables.” I really had no idea what I was getting myself into when I decided to read it. I had seen previews for the 2012 movie “Les Miserables” staring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and Anne Hathaway and thought to myself “Hmm. I think I will read the book first.” I dove into this decision by reading the first volume, “Fantine.” It was only after I finished...

Growing up on a farm, I had a lot of childhood memories. I was hoping my children would also have some of those same memories, but that idea was crushed when my parents decided to sell their Minnesota dairy farm. They needed to; and it was time, but it was still hard to say goodbye to the old homestead. This was numerous years ago. I cannot even remember what year, but this week I was reminded that my children can still have great childhood memories without a farm. My family recently made a trip...
When walking into a library the last thing residents might expect is to hear is the sound of children singing. This may be the case with other libraries, but not the Sweetwater County Library. On Monday mornings, for about an hour, the multipurpose room is transformed into a toddler heaven. Yes. It's that time of the year again. Flu shot time. While most of us tend to cringe at the sound of getting a shot, some think of it as a shot now, no flu later sort of a deal. According to the Center for Disease Control website, www.cdc.gov/flu, the "CDC recommends an annual flu vaccine for everyone six months of age and older. Flu activity is low across the United States now, but usually begins to increase in October and most commonly peaks between January and March." Sweetwater County...
The attendance was sparse for a fun event at the Golden Hour Senior Center. On Thursday, only two seniors showed up for the JELLO bird feeder event, but they sure had a good time. Once it was at the right consistency, not too hard and not too soft, she added the seeds. The residents took over from...
