The Green River Wolves Soccer team headed into the 4A West Regional Soccer Tournament in Green River with high hopes of earning their spot in the 4A State Championships. The boys endured many obstacles this year, dealing with multiple injuries on and off the field. Despite these challenges, the Wolves went into Regionals as the fourth seed team.
Green River played their first game against the Riverton Wolverines on Thursday, May 15. During the first half of the game, the Wolves played very well offensively and defensively. Regardless of a defensive mistake that led to a penalty kick and Riverton scoring one goal, the Wolves effectively controlled the game, but they were unable to find the back of the net. In the second half of the game, both teams played excellent defense and there were no goals made while offensively, both teams were unable to score. The Wolves ended the game losing to the Wolverines 0-1.
Braxton Doak, Gavin Mares, Aiden Morris, Irie Kuball and Izyk Arellano made shot attempts during the game but were unsuccessful. Goalkeeper Colter Davis had four saves at the net. The Wolves were eliminated after the loss and officially ended their season as the Wolverines moved on.
Head Coach Josh Webb was pleased with the boys’ overall performance and feels they played a very good game.
“I’m proud of them for getting bumped up to 4A and competing so well,” he explained. “The teams are a lot more physical, bigger, and all the coaches are more tactical. These boys did a good job for as young of a team as they are.”
Coach Webb and the rest of the team will be saying goodbye to Jaxon Morris and Aiden Falcon as they played their last game for Green River High School.
“They brought a lot to the team,” Webb added. “Aiden is quick and I could play him anywhere and Jaxon could play anywhere. I will miss them.”
After Regional play ended on Saturday, the teams that are moving forward to compete in the 4A State Championships are the first seed Jackson Broncs, the second seed Kelly Walsh Trojans, the third seed Riverton Wolverines and the fourth seed Rock Springs Tigers.
