Lady Wolves Softball has solid performance at Regionals

The Green River Lady Wolves Softball team traveled to Laramie last weekend to play in the 4A South Regional Tournament. They played a total of three games, with two on Friday and one on Saturday.

Their first matchup was against the Wheatland Bulldogs, and this game was a high-scoring affair as both teams batted well. Green River started things off with one run in the top of the first inning, and Wheatland responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. The game remained close through the third inning, with the score being tied 3-3 at the end of the inning. The Bulldogs heated up in the fourth inning, and scored eight runs to take a big lead. Green River brought the game back within striking distance during the fifth and sixth innings, bringing the score to 9-12 after the top of the sixth. But the Bulldogs had another strong inning in the bottom of the sixth, scoring nine more runs to shut down Green River’s attempt at a comeback. This brought the final score to 9-21 after six innings of play.

Green River got a total of nine hits during this game. Kodi Allred was the best hitter for the Lady Wolves, getting a hit in all four of her at bats, including a triple in the third inning. Chacee Shiner, Haidyn Terry, Jocelyn Shantz, Danielle Maag, and Izzy Kelley all got a hit as well. Terry pitched the majority of the game for the team. She allowed 12 hits while earning six strikeouts. She was relieved by Emma Rieck, who allowed six hits with no strikeouts.

Green River’s next game was against the Torrington Trailblazers, and they were in for another high-scoring game. The action started right away with Torrington scoring three runs in the top of the first, with Green River only managing to score one run during the bottom of the first. The Lady Wolves heated up in the second inning however, and scored six unanswered points to take the lead 7-3. The Trailblazers wouldn’t go down easily and tied the game back up during the third inning, but Green River had another great inning during the fourth to reclaim a 14-9 lead. Green River carried this momentum into the fifth inning, and ended up winning the game 20-10 after five innings.

The Lady Wolves racked up an outstanding 21 hits throughout this game. Allred was swinging for the fences once again, and led the team with five hits in five at bats, including two triples. Just behind her was Shiner, who got four hits, one of which was a triple. Ally White and Izzy Kelley both got three hits, and Rieck got two hits. Terry, Maag, Shantz, and Cassie Kelley all managed to get a hit as well. Terry was pitching again for this game, and allowed 13 hits while earning five strikeouts.

The Lady Wolves’ final game was against the Cheyenne Central Indians. This game was much more defensive than the prior games, and Green River struggled to get their bats going. The Indians got out to an early lead in the bottom of the first with three runs, then scored three more runs during the third to take a 6-0 lead. Green River got on the board during the fifth inning with one run, but couldn’t find their way across home plate for the rest of the game, falling 1-9 after six and a half innings.

White was Green River’s top batter for this game, getting on base in both of her at bats. One of these hits was a triple, and she also scored Green River’s only run of the game. Shantz, Allred, and Shiner all picked up one hit as well. Terry pitched once more, and allowed 10 hits while earning three strikeouts.

Head Coach Mark Hyde said that he was happy with how the team played, and felt they did well considering how tough the teams they had to play were.

“We played well this weekend and did a lot of good things. We had to play some good teams and had a hard road to try to make state. The improvements that we made from the beginning of the year to now are exponential. It obviously wasn't the result we wanted but I talked to the girls about how much they had to be proud of. We won the most games we have won in a season, we won our first postseason game, and we were competitive in a lot of games no one thought we would be in,” he stated.

He also emphasized how much of an impact the seniors of the team had on the season. He said they were great leaders, and that the team had really good chemistry because of this. He also feels they did a good job in preparing the younger girls to fill their spots once they are gone next year, so hopefully the team can continue to improve and have another productive season.
