Lady Wolves Softball struggles against Lady Tigers, heads to Regionals

The Lady Wolves Softball team headed over to Rock Springs last Thursday to play their final regular season games. They played the Lady Tigers in two games, with the first game being their last conference game.

The conference game was a low scoring, defensive game. Rock Springs got out to an early lead with one run in the bottom of the first inning, and Green River struggled to get into the game after this. Rock Springs expanded their lead in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring one more run in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth. Green River couldn't get going on offense, and ending up losing the game 0-4 after six and a half innings.

Haidyn Terry pitched for the Lady Wolves for this game and allowed six hits while earning four strikeouts. Green River got five hits this game, with their best batter being Kodi Allred who got on base in two of her three at bats. Izzy Kelley, Emma Rieck, and Terry all got one hit as well.

Head Coach Mark Hyde said that he was happy with how the girls played on defense during this game, and emphasized how well they played in the field.

"We played well defensively against Rock Springs. The girls were ready for that game and we had some good things happen. We just couldn't get the hits that we needed to score some runs," he stated.

The following game against Rock Springs was more competitive, with each team having a strong showing on offense. Green River got on the board early with two runs in the top of the first, but Rock Springs responded right away with four runs of their own. Rock Springs scored another run in the bottom of the second, and then another in the bottom of the third, bringing their lead to 6-2. Green River started to mount their comeback in the fourth inning, scoring two more runs to cut Rock Spring's lead in half. Green River scored another run in the fifth inning, bringing the game within one point. They unfortunately couldn't manage to score the last run they needed, leading to a 5-6 loss after five and a half innings.

Green River racked up an impressive 11 hits during this game, which is three more hits than Rock Springs had. Despite out-hitting the other team, the Lady Wolves just couldn't get enough runners home. Leading the team in batting for this game were Chacee Shiner, Rieck and Imagin Wilde with two hits each. Terry, Allred, Ally White, Danielle Maag, and Cassie Kelley all managed to get one hit. Green River's pitcher for this game was Rieck. She allowed eight hits and got one strikeout.

These losses to the Lady Tigers brings Green River's overall record for the season to 8-16, with a conference record of 2-4. They are ranked third in their conference quadrant, with the standings as follows:

Laramie 5-1

Rock Springs 4-2

Green River 2-4

Cheyenne South 1-5

This week the Lady Wolves will be playing in the 4A South Regional Tournament. The tournament will be held in Laramie, with games starting on Friday and continuing through Saturday. Green River's first game will be against the second seed of the southeast quadrant, the Wheatland Bulldogs. The game starts at 11 a.m. on Friday. Their second game will be against either Laramie or Torrington, depending on the outcome of the first game. Coach Hyde said the team is focusing on the basics and trying to put everything together going into Regionals. He feels the team often plays well on one side of the ball, but struggles on the other side.

"When our bats are going, our fielding hasn't always been as sharp, and when we're fielding well, our bats tend to go quiet," he stated. He feels that if the team can manage to play to their potential on both sides of the ball, then they have a good chance to make it far in Regionals.
