Lady Wolves play hard in Rock Springs tournament

The Green River Lady Wolves Softball team went to Rock Springs last Friday to play in a tournament. They also had a conference game against the Cheyenne South Bison last Tuesday.

The conference game against the Bison was very close, with many lead changes throughout the game. Green River came out strong with four runs in the top of the first inning, and had the lead until the third inning where the Bison scored four runs of their own. The Bison were up 6-4 heading into the fifth, but Green River managed to score four more runs to take the lead back. Cheyenne South quickly responded with another four runs in the sixth inning, taking the lead 11-8. Green River came up just short in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs, which led to a 10-11 defeat after six and a half innings.

Despite the narrow defeat, Green River had some players who did very well batting. Kodi Allred got a home run in her one hit of the game, scoring two runs on a fly ball to right field. Haidyn Terry had the most hits for the team, getting a hit in three of her four at bats, including a triple. Izzy Kelley and Chacee Shiner both got two hits, followed by Danielle Maag and Jocelyn Shantz with one hit each. Terry was Green River's pitcher for this game. She allowed eight hits while earning six strikeouts.

Head Coach Mark Hyde felt the team could have won this game but wasn't prepared enough and fell flat. He added that the team did well in batting, but made too many errors in the field.

Next up for Green River was the Rock Springs tournament, and their first game was a rematch against Cheyenne South. The Lady Wolves were determined to get revenge for their recent loss, and they played a phenomenal first inning. They racked up nine runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead 9-1. The team continued to play well and expanded their lead to 14-3 by the end of the third inning. Green River shut out Cheyenne South in the fourth and fifth innings, leading to a 14-3 victory after four and a half innings.

Shantz led the team in hits this time, getting on base in all three of her at bats. Ally White, Emma Rieck, and Terry also batted well, with all three players getting two hits. Terry pitched the first two innings, allowing only two hits while earning two strikeouts. The remaining three innings were pitched by Hadlee Mortimer, who allowed five hits while earning one strikeout.

Coach Hyde was very happy with how the team bounced back for this game.

"We kept the fielding errors down and hit the ball really well. It was nice to come back from Tuesday and 10 run the team that we just lost to," he stated.

Next up for the Lady Wolves in the tournament was the Laramie Plainsmen. This game ended up being very close, with a strong offensive showing from both teams. Laramie came out swinging, taking a demanding 8-1 lead by the end of the second inning. They continued to build their lead, and after scoring four runs in the top of the fifth they were up 15-5. Green River kept playing hard and scored seven unanswered runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, but the team wasn't quite able to complete the comeback, and ultimately lost the game 12-15.

Green River racked up an impressive 17 hits during this game. Terry, Allred, and White led the charge for the Lady Wolves, with each player getting three hits. Just behind them were Shiner, Rieck, and Shantz who all got two hits. Terry was the team's pitcher for this game, and she gave up 13 hits while earning five strikeouts.

Despite the loss, Coach Hyde was really proud of how the team played in this game.

"We were down 10 in the fifth and rallied back to pull it within three. Being down 10 the team could have given up and they didn't. They hit the ball hard and forced the starting pitcher out of the game," he said.

Green River's final game of the tournament was against the Rock Springs Lady Tigers. The game started out close, with Green River being up 2-1 after two innings. Rock Springs broke the game open in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs. Green River played well for the remainder of the game and outscored Rock Springs 4-3 in the remaining innings, but it wasn't enough to recover from the third inning deficit. The Lady Wolves ended up losing 6-10 after six innings.

Kelley, Terry, and Rieck led the team in batting this game, getting two hits each. Shiner, Allred, and Maag all managed to get a hit as well. White and Allred both pitched during the first three innings for Green River. White gave up two hits while earning two strikeouts, while Allred gave up zero hits and earned one strikeout. Rieck pitched the remainder of the game, and gave up five hits while earning three strikeouts.

This week Green River has their final two games of the regular season. They will be headed over to Rock Springs again to take on the Lady Tigers. Both games will be today, with the first starting at 3:30 p.m.
