Local Girl Scouts receive Silver Award of the Year

A trio of local Girl Scouts have not only worked to improve the community, but have gained regional recognition and honor for doing so.

In April it was announced that Olivia Wilkenson, Emma Whitehead and Kymani Reid, members of local Girl Scout Troop 1932, had achieved their Silver Award status.

According to troop leader Jennifer Wilkinson, the Silver Award is the second-highest award in Girl Scouts, and in order to complete it scouts have to find a problem in the community and create a lasting solution. The trio completed their award work by partnering with Sweetwater County School District No. 2 to improve safety conditions for transportation loading zones, including bus loading and unloading zones.

During a ceremony hosted this past Sunday to celebrate their accomplishment, it was announced that the three Scouts had received the added honor of being awarded the Silver Award of the Year by the Girl Scouts of Montana and Wyoming Council. On hand for the ceremony were Girl Scouts of Montana and Wyoming Council representatives Melissa Webb and Megan Neilson.

When presenting the award, Neilson said, "Out of all the Girl Scouts in Montana and Wyoming who submitted and earned their Silver Awards, you three and your troop stood out as the best of the best."

During the ceremony, the girls and troop leaders also expressed gratitude for many community members that aided them in achieving their goals, especially Rachel Todd, the transportation director for School District No. 2.
