988 suicide hotline saves lives

The state of Wyoming has taken a significant step in addressing its longstanding struggle with high suicide rates by implementing the 988 suicide hotline.

This critical tool in the fight against suicides has proven to be an invaluable resource for individuals facing mental health crises in the state. The 988 hotline, unlike national hotlines, operates locally in Wyoming, with trained counselors based in Casper and Greybull who are available around the clock. This localized approach ensures that individuals calling the hotline receive support from professionals familiar with the unique challenges faced by Wyoming residents.

The budget session is in full swing, and the continued funding for the 988 hotline is crucial to sustaining its operations and impact. However, there are voices within the Wyoming Legislature opposing the hotline’s funding, citing a desire to reduce government spending.

“Unfortunately, I can’t say all of our colleagues join us in wanting to address this problem,” said Rep. Cyrus Western (HD-51). “The Freedom Caucus insists they’re in office to help average folks, yet actively fought against the establishment of the hotline because, they argued, it was government spending, and it wouldn’t be effective.

It is essential to recognize that supporting mental health initiatives, such as the 988 hotline, is not just a matter of fiscal responsibility but aligns with a fundamentally conservative idea of prioritizing the well-being and safety of the state’s residents.

Wyoming has historically grappled with one of the highest suicide rates per capita in the nation, making the 988 hotline a vital lifeline for those in crisis. The opposition to its funding under the guise of reducing government spending may stem from a misunderstanding of the proper role of government.

“To be clear, more work needs to be done,” said Rep. Cyrus Western. “But we need to ensure funding for the hotline remains in place through swings in our budget to create a continuity our community can count on.”

Investing in mental health services, particularly those tailored to the unique needs of Wyoming’s population, is a responsible and compassionate use of public resources. The 988 hotline stands as a testament to the state’s commitment to addressing mental health challenges within our borders and saving lives in the process.
