Lady Wolves strike out against Cheyenne East and Kelly Walsh

The Lady Wolves Softball team traveled to Gillette to compete in the 4A State Championships last Thursday. Their first game on Thursday was against the Cheyenne East Thunderbirds. Green River fought the entire game but struggled putting the bat to the ball. Cheyenne East dominated the game and won with a final score of 11-0.

"We had about three costly errors in the outfield that really was the difference in the game," said Head Coach Blair Aimone. "The game was definitely closer than the score portrayed and if we could have changed three things it would have been a whole different ballgame."

Coach Aimone believes there are little things they need to work on but with time the team will get there. They are a very young team and only graduated one player this year. The outfield is primarily underclassman, and the more the team plays together, the better they will become.

On Friday, the Lady Wolves played the Kelly Walsh Trojans. Kelly Walsh scored three runs in the first and second innings and Green River was held at zero. There were no runs in the third inning, and Kelly Walsh dominated the fourth inning with 10 runs. Green River scored one run in the fifth inning, ending the game with Kelly Walsh in the lead 16-1.

"Their bats came alive and ours did not," said Coach Aimone. "Overall, I'm proud of the girls and how they played and never gave up. I mean, we were down 16 and by looking at the dugout, you couldn't tell. They were in it until the end."

The Lady Wolves have great attitudes and are going to keep grinding, keep pushing and keep working hard, and Coach Aimone says "good things will come" from this young team.

Coach Aimone is extremely satisfied with how the girls played this year. The girls stepped up and played as a team and earned their place at State. She said she was approached by parents and players from other schools and even coaches telling her how much these girls have improved.

"That's a testament to how hard our girls work," added Coach Aimone. "Sometimes we have to measure success without the win and loss record, and these girls are getting better every single day and people are noticing, so that's really awesome to hear and see."
