The Green River Girls and Boys Track and Field team kicked off their outdoor season with a trip south to compete with 24 other teams from around the region in the Early Bird Invitational. The meet was hosted in Orem, Utah at the Mountain View High School track Friday, March 17 and Saturday, March 18.
The meet, which involved 34 different events with over 120 competitors in some of those events, started with pleasant weather, but Friday afternoon’s competition was cut short because of a timing systems issue. Since the weather had gotten much colder in the late afternoon, most athletes were happy to postpone some of the events until Saturday.
The Wolves have the largest number of athletes out for track that they have had for several years, with a lot of young freshmen and sophomores along with a group of experienced junior and senior leaders. However, only about half the team competed in this meet as the rest were either on spring break or will be coming from other sports, according to Head Track Coach Dan Hansen.
Competing against schools with much larger student enrollments, the boys team finished 21st out of the 24 teams, with the girls taking 22nd.
Green River will be returning to Orem next weekend to gain valuable competition experience as they will compete in another large regional meet at Utah Valley State at the UVU Invitational. The team will only take their top athletes as the meet has very limited entries allowed per team, according to Hansen.
