Girls compete at first State Championships

The Green River Girls Wrestling team competed in the first-ever Wyoming Girls State Championships this past Thursday and Friday, February 23 and 24, in Casper at the Wyoming Ford Center.

There were 30 teams competing, and the Lady Wolves finished in the top half of the state with a 13th-place finish. The team of two seniors, two juniors and two sophomores has stayed the course during the season. At State the team had some great matches, with half of the girls finishing in the top six and all of them gaining valuable experience.

The top finisher on the day for Green River was Senior Zella Maez. She pinned her first two opponents before taking on the 120-pound champion from Newcastle, who had perhaps the best record in the tourney at 31-2. Maez brought the Newcastle champion to a tie at the end of regulation before losing in sudden death. Maez then pinned her final two opponents to take third.

Head wrestling Coach Josh Wisniewski commented, “These young ladies wrestled well at State.”

He went on to say “some of them may not have accomplished what they set out to do, but they have nothing to hang their heads about.”

Coach Wisniewski exclaimed that he was very proud of the young ladies. He stated that “it’s very brave to try something new, let alone wrestling. They worked very hard all season long and really learned a lot about wrestling. They have all bought into the wrestling culture and will be better people from it.”

Wisniewski also believes the girls program will keep growing.

“That’s the goal!” he said. “We want to provide more opportunities for these women.” The coach concluded, “they will always be known as the first GRHS Lady Wolves Wrestling team, and that is really special!”
