Wolves squash Evanston and Rock Springs

This past Wednesday, the Green River High School Wrestling teams, including the Boys Varsity, Girls Varsity and Boys J.V. teams, all traveled to Evanston. The Evanston Red Devils are in their first year of 3A wrestling after dropping down from 4A. All three of the Green River teams defeated Evanston in highly competitive matches.

The girls had just three girls wrestling on the day, losing one match by a fall and winning two by falls. Lily Harris at 132 and Brianna Uhrig at 114 both pinned their opponents as the Lady Wolves won the meet 12-6.

Head Wrestling Coach Josh Wisniewski commented that everyone wrestled well over all.

"It was a good environment," the coach said. "Evanston's fans were loud and it helped them."

He was however, "happy about how our guys wrestled in that environment."

With no rest, the Green River Boys Varsity and Junior Varsity took on cross-county rival the Rock Springs Tigers on Thursday, Feb. 9.

Coach Wisniewski was again "very happy to get the win." He was especially pleased that "they got after pins, which is nice to see."

Coach pointed out that the girls did not wrestle and that they only had six junior varsity matches. Wisniewski commented on the great environment at their home gym and felt that the night provided a great sendoff for the seniors, being that it was senior night. Seniors leaving the mat for the Wolves are Deylin Miller, Ryker Mele, Thomas Dalton, Conner Todd, Hunter Davis, Ethan Guzman, Tyler Waters, Mark Nelson, Ethan Maez, Jayleigh Wright and Zella Maez. He went on to say that "we are going to miss our seniors, particularly their leadership in the wrestling room."

Finally, Wisniewski stated that "between the two duals we need to be better in certain situations, but we are getting there." He noted that "the team is looking forward to Regionals back in Evanston and getting after that challenge."

The 3A West Regionals will take place in Evanston Feb. 17 with Evanston, Green River, Cody, Lander, Lyman, Mountain View, Pinedale, Powell and Riverton participating.
