Wolves fall to No. 2 ranked Star Valley

The Green River Wolves football team traveled to Star Valley to take on the second ranked, 3A, 5-2 Star Valley Braves on Senior Night for the Braves. Star Valley amassed 222 yards running the ball and 224 yards passing with their quarterback throwing four touchdown passes.

The Braves kicked off to Green River, who was unable to move the ball in just three offensive plays and had to punt to the Braves. The Braves marched right down the field, focusing on the run, but their pass to the end zone was intercepted by the Wolves’ Hunter Finley and Green River had stopped Star Valley’s drive with a big defensive play. The Wolves had seven offensive plays on this series, but once again stalled and kicked the ball back to Star Valley who ran the ball five straight times, taking it in from five yards out for their first score of the game. Star Valley missed the two point conversion try but took an early 6-0 lead. The Wolves ran seven more plays and just before the end of the quarter they punted the ball back to Star Valley. Star Valley then mounted a long drive with mostly run plays, but on a pass to a wide open receiver they took a 13-0 lead with the P.A.T. kick good.

Unfortunately for Green River, on the ensuing kickoff the returner was tackled around the neck and fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Star Valley who took just two plays to score a touchdown. The P.A.T. run attempt by an offensive lineman was good for two points, and the Braves had taken a big 21-0 early lead. On Green River’s next series they got a big 23-yard completion from Lake to Skyler Lee, but the Braves’ defense tightened and the Wolves turned the ball back over to the Braves. On Star Valley’s next possession, Green River’s defense rose to the occasion when Nate Mitchell recovered a fumble. Despite mounting a longer drive, they were unable to score.

The second half was more of the same as Star Valley increased their lead to 49-0 before Green River, still playing hard, finally scored on a run by Mitchell to end the scoring at 49-7.

Next week the Wolves will take to the road again to play the Evanston Red Devils who are in last place in the 3A West, which will give the Wolves the opportunity to still make the playoffs.
