The Green River Wolves took the five-hour, 300-mile trip north this past Friday to take on the two-time defending State champion Cody Broncs, who are 4-0 this season, on their home field on homecoming night. Cody had by far the largest contingent of football players in 3A on their roster with 105 players out this year, giving them a very experienced deep squad.
The Wolves kicked off to Cody and caught a break right away as it was a short kick and the Wolves recovered what appeared to be an inadvertent on-side kick. On first down, Green River's senior quarterback Caleb Lake connected with fellow senior Hunter Finley for a short four-yard pass. Cody was offsides and the Wolves gained five yards on the penalty before their leading ball carrier Bracken Miller busted through Cody's line for a 10-yard gain. The Wolves were moving, but on the next play the Wolves' pass was intercepted. Cody ripped off a big 45-yard run on first down and a couple short runs later took the ball into the endzone. With the P.A.T kick good, Cody had taken a quick 7-0 lead.
The Wolves started their next drive at the 20-yard line. After Miller got off a three-yard run, Lake again connected with Finley for a 10-yard pass completion and the Wolves were once again moving the ball. But after two penalties against Green River and two against Cody, the Wolves fumbled the ball and the Broncs recovered it, giving the ball back to Cody. Cody then went three plays and out and it was looking like it may be a competitive game.
Bracken picked up yards on three carries and Lake again connected with Finley, this time for 23 yards, but Cody's defense stopped the Wolves and they had to punt. Cody got the ball and took it the length of the field for their second score of the game and a 14-0 lead.
Things went from bad to worse after Green River's offense stalled again despite another completion to Finley. On the Wolves' punt to begin the second quarter, Cody returned the ball 70 yards for a quick score, and with the point after kick good once more Cody had a quick 21-0 lead.
The Wolves got the ball back and ran three plays and once more had to punt. With two big gains by Cody's quarterback, Cody had another quick score and the route was on 28-0. A backwards pass on Green River's next series of downs was recovered by Cody who immediately completed a pass for a touchdown but missed the extra point to take a commanding 34-0 lead.
On Green River's next series, Blake was able to connect on two more passes to Finley but he was sacked and a fumble was recovered by Cody's scoring machine, upping their first half lead to 41-0. Cody scored once more before half to take an impressive 48-0 lead into the locker room at the half.
The two teams exchanged possessions several times in the third quarter with no scoring until Cody scored on a shovel pass just before the end of the third quarter to extend their lead to 55-0. Cody scored two more touchdowns in the 4th quarter to make it 69-0, but Green River's second string players scored just before the game ended to avoid the shutout, with the final score at 69-6. Cody ended the game with 486 yards in total offense, holding Green River to 230 yards. Cody had no turnovers, with the Wolves turning the ball over four times by fumbles and two pass interceptions which stalled their drives and disrupted their offense.
The Wolves will take on the always-tough Star Valley Braves Friday in Green River.
