Lady Wolves basketball team earn conference wins

The Green River High School girls basketball team is moving up in conference competition, getting two more wins last weekend.

First the Lady Wolves fought for a close win over Evanston last Thursday, coming out on top in a 43-41 finish. The competition stayed neck-and-neck for the first two quarters. Green River began to pull ahead in the third quarter and early fourth quarter when Evanston began to close the gap. Towards the end Green River struggled with turning the ball over and missing some free throws, according to Coach Rick Carroll, but they held it together to get the win.

Megan Counts led the Lady Wolves against Evanston, scoring almost half of the team’s points during the game and getting six rebounds. Daryn Macy also contributed 12 points and six rebounds, and Alyssa Cudney had four steals. The team also cut down on the number of times they turned the ball over from previous games and stayed close to the competition on the number of rebounds.

After playing Evanston the Lady Wolves took on Jackson last Saturday. Their second game wasn’t close like their first, and ended with Green River winning 62-32. While the team started a little slow according to Carroll, missing baskets and not playing hard defense early on, they began to pick it up in the second quarter and maintained their lead for the rest of the game.

“We stole the ball from them during that time and turned some of those steals into easy baskets,” Carroll explained. “So we made our job a little bit easier on the offense again by doing a good job with some defensive pressure.”

Against Jackson, Counts had 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Ella Stanton got 10 points, five rebounds and three steals. Sarah Wilson also helped her team mates with eight assists.

Now 6-3 in conference, the Lady Wolves are preparing for big games this weekend. The Make A Wish game against Rock Springs will take place tonight at GRHS.

Then Green River will play their last conference game against Star Valley on Friday. While Carroll has seen improvement in the team, he hopes to keep working on taking care of the ball, keeping the other team away from the basket and being patient before taking shots.

“We just need to make sure we’re focused and we’re ready to play,” Carroll said. “We keep saying we want to play our best basketball of the year as we continue to move forward, and that’s still our goal right now.”
