Snowstorm limits wrestling team's final duals
February 17, 2021
The final week of duals for the Green River High School wrestling team resulted in less competition that the team and coaches were hoping for, but that isn’t stopping them from being ready for the Regional tournament Friday.
The Wolves traveled to Sheridan for a varsity dual with Sheridan and Thunder Basin from Gillette. Head coach Josh Wisniewski said the team wasn’t able to arrive on time because of the snowy roads, but was impressed with how quickly the team readied for their matches. He said they were able to work in a short warm up before weighing in and hitting the mat.
The night didn’t go the way the Wolves would have wanted, as they loss 54-19 to Sheridan and 61-18 to Thunder Basin. Wisniewski said the team won a few matches, while losing some close matches during both duals. Wisniewski was happy with Tommy Dalton during the Thunder Basin meet, saying Dalton gave the Wolves a boost in their points off of a pin.
Natrona was scheduled to take part in the duals, but canceled due to road conditions. Cancellations plagued the second day of competition when teams from Wheatland and Powell canceled an appearance in Buffalo Saturday, resulting in the sole dual the Wolves participating in being against the hosting Bison.
The Wolves defeated the Bison 64-12.
“They wrestled pretty well,” Wisniewski said.
During the dual, Wisniewski said Brett Stanton was able to save his match with only six seconds remaining, scoring off of a throw and tying the score. Stanton then snatched the victory in overtime.
Right now, Wisniewski said he wants the wrestlers to be mentally prepared for Regionals, saying the wrestlers have the technique they need to compete.
“Our philosophy is we want to wrestle our best by the time Regionals and State come,” he said.
The tournament takes place in Green River this year, with competition starting Friday.
