Calendars introduced to school board

December 11, 2019

The school calendars for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school years were brought to the Sweetwater County School District No. 2 Board of Trustees Tuesday night.

The board’s vote was not available as of press time.

According to Interim Superintendent Jamie Christiansen, the two calendars were created through input received by surveys issued to staff and parents, as well as the board.

Christiansen said the calendar doesn’t change drastically from the district’s current calendar. He said the board wanted to keep the end of the first semester in line with the start of the Christmas break. That guideline helped create much of the calendar’s dates, as the school year could not start after Labor Day and the end of the second semester would occur prior to Memorial Day.

Two things the schedule survey revealed was a desire to free up the Wednesday before Thanksgiving for travel and keeping Spring Break in March.

Christiansen said the 2021-2022 school calendar was created after the survey was completed, while next year’s school calendar was amended to reflect trends found in the survey. Originally, Nov. 25, 2020 was scheduled as a school day before the calendar committee decided to close the district that day.

With Spring Break, Christiansen said teachers faced difficulties when the break was tied to Easter when Easter took place in April. The problem comes from the WY-TOPP assessment also taking place in mid April and the break occurring before the test.

“It was hard for teachers because you want your students prepared for the test,” Christiansen said.

Christiansen said the break is scheduled for the third week of March next year.
