Resident receives UW award

A resident who's dedicated to helping others will be recognized at a University of Wyoming awards banquet.

Green River resident Brittany Wells Gray recently received notification that she would receive the Rising Alumni Award from the University of Wyoming at an upcoming awards banquet in September.

According to the University of Wyoming's website http://www.uwyo.edu, the Rising Alumni Award "recognizes alumni of the University of Wyoming who have graduated in the last 10 years and distinguished themselves through a high level of professional accomplishment in their career."

Wells is the Climb Wyoming Sweetwater County area program director. Climb Wyoming offers single mothers a variety of free job-training programs, which helps them find better career opportunities.

"Supporting others as they make meaningful changes has been a pulling force in my life," Gray said. "This is why my current work with Climb Wyoming means so much to me. I genuinely love helping others succeed. It's an honor to be part of someone else's journey."

While she is busy helping single mothers obtain their goals of finding a career, someone was busy nominating her for this award. Gray said she still doesn't know who nominated her.

"I'm deeply honored to be selected as the recipient of the Rising Alumni Award," Gray said. "I want to express my gratitude to my family, my husband, and my two boys who have supported me in all my undertakings and everyone I have had the opportunity to work with and learn from throughout my personal/professional career."

Gray's college background

Gray received a bachelor's degree in journalism in 2008 and will earn her master's degree in communications in the fall.

Gray was the first female awarded the Pistol Pete mascot scholarship. She was also awarded the Robert Combs Warner "Top Drawer Award" News Photography and Photojournalism scholarship, McCracken "Outstanding Journalist" scholarship, was on the Dean's Honor Roll for six semesters, President's Honor Roll, member of the Lambda Pi Eta COJO Department Honor Society, and founder/Vice President of the first UW Sign Language Club, assisted with the online launch of the UW newspaper, the Branding Iron, and worked as the online editor, reporter and photographer.

"UW opened doors I never even knew existed," Gray said. "When I graduated from UW, I was no longer a small-town girl, but rather a young adult, itching to contribute something meaningful."

Careers after college

Gray was the public relations specialist for the Sweetwater County Library System; served as Congresswoman Liz Cheney's communications director during Cheney's U.S. Senate campaign; public relations, marketing and development manager for the Sweetwater County Child Development Center and later Climb Wyoming.

"I was honored to return to the role of the Sweetwater area program director," Gray said. "With newly diversified funding, and committed community partners, I stepped back into the role with confidence in our longevity and excitement about making a significant impact in the lives of the single mothers and children that Climb serves."
