GRHS tennis team hosts clinic

Members of the Green River High School tennis team shared their knowledge and love of the sport during a clinic hosted at the high school last week.

According to head coach Phil Harder, the clinic attracted 40 participants, 20 of which ranged between incoming fifth-grade students to incoming high-school freshmen. Harder said they've been able to teach third and fourth-grade students how to rally the ball and other important skills by the end of four-day long clinic. Aside from that, Harder said his players enjoy the experience.

"It's a lot of fun," he said. "The kids love the high school students."

The clinic is a fundraiser for the team, which competes during two high school sports seasons. Tennis players have the opportunity to play during the spring and fall seasons, with the state tennis tournament taking place in the fall.

Aside from fundraising, the clinics also help plant the seeds for future teams by generating an interest in tennis, a sport that often isn't considered by potential high school athletes until they're in high school. Harder said the team has hosted several clinics during the past few years and is seeing several students return to the clinics each time they're hosted. While giving children a chance to learn the sport, Harder hopes the clinics will help grow the team, bringing players on board who have an understanding of the fundamentals when they join.
