The Green River High School Hall of Fame’s 2019 list of inductees include a beloved swimming coach, GRHS’s first undefeated football team and a man who helped create the Lincoln High Mirth and Missives newsletter.
The hall of fame committee announced its list of inductions Tuesday morning, along with the schedule of Hall of Fame Weekend events.
Longtime Green River swim coach Randy Walker will be inducted this year. Walker is a former head high school swimming coach and was inducted into the Wyoming Coaches Hall-of-Fame. He earned nominations for conference and state swimming coach of the year and swim teams under his direction have earned a total 16 conference championships and three state championships. Outside of swimming,
Walker has served the community in a number of capacities, including on the Green River City Council and the Sweetwater County Board of County Commissioners.
A relay team Walker coached in 1997 will also be inducted. The 1997 boys 200-meter freestyle relay team, consisting of Ben Britton, Mike Moody, Dustin Robbins and Matthew Dockter, held the state record time in the event for 17 years. The team was also ranked ninth in the nation.
Nancy Raso Eklund, a longtime physical education teacher for Sweetwater County School District No. 2, will also be inducted. She was the national American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance teacher of the year and was the executive director of the Wyoming Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. She was the chair of the district’s wellness committee as well.
The 1927 Wolves football team will be inducted as the first undefeated football team in school history. The team’s head coach was Robert Huey and its team captain was Kenneth Peters. The team only gave up nine points throughout the season.
Gary Cain, a 1958 graduate of Lincoln High School, was inducted for being the organizer of Meeting on the Green and a co-creator of the Lincoln High Mirth and Missives newsletter.
The final inductee is Cheryl Ann Chew Packham, a 2000 graduate of GRHS and veteran of the Iraq War, having received a purple heart during her tour of duty.
Hall of Fame weekend takes place Sept. 27-28. The Wolves will face the Star Valley Braves during the Friday football game, with the Hall of Fame inductees set to be honored during halftime. A banquet will take place at 5 p.m. Sept. 28, with a social to follow at 7:30 p.m.
