Mitchell signs with Minot State University

A leader for the Green River High School football team will become a Minot State University Beaver after graduating this May.

Anthony Mitchell signed a letter of intent to play football in Minot, N.D., Monday afternoon.

"It seemed like the program needed me," Anthony said.

He is a two-time All-State and All-Conference selection for the Wolves. According to statistics maintained by Wyopreps.com, Anthony was the Wolves' leading defensive player with 116 defensive points during the 2018 season. He recorded 75 tackles, one blocked kick, two fumble recoveries and one tackle for a loss of yardage. On offense, Anthony recorded 17.4 yards on average per game, earning 139 total yards for the season. He is also one of two GRHS players selected for the 2019 Shrine Bowl, joining teammate Anthony Johnson on the South Team.

Head football coach Marty Wrage described Anthony as a leader at practice and the Wolves' football games. Wrage said Anthony was a captain for the team and always helped younger players learn their positions.

Minot State is a D2 program, but Anthony said the facilities were comparable to D1 schools. He made an official visit in early December, but had been in contact with the university throughout the school year. Anthony's father Chris said a representative of the school made the 12-hour drive from Minot, N.D., to Green River to visit with Anthony and said they were always in contact with him throughout the Wolves' football season.

"They called every Friday to talk with him," Chris said.

Chris said he was also personally impressed with Minot, N.D., saying he expected to see an oilfield town and was surprised to see what the city had to offer its residents.

Anthony said he plans to study biology at the moment, expressing an interest in working with the forest service.
