Speech and debate team takes 1st

The speech and debate team took first this weekend in a Jackson tournament.

The Green River High School Speech and Debate team competed against eight other teams at this tournament and came out on top with 100 points. They were followed by Natrona High School with 96 points, Riverton High School with 56 points and Rock Springs High School with 49.

“We really came together as a team this weekend and the results showed that,” head coach Carina White said.

The debate team members continue to do well, she said. They went to the finals and took first place in cross examination, Lincoln Douglas and public forum debate this weekend.

However, there is always room for improvement.

“We need to find ways to make our interpretation events like humor, drama and duet capable of getting first place,” White said.

One student stood out to White this week. Mikki Scott took her fourth first-place finish of the season in informative.

“I am so proud of how this team has come together and supports one another,” White said. “The talent level on this team is incredible and good things are coming our way in the future. I am excited to see what the remainder of this season holds for us.”

The season is starting to wind down for the team and they only have a few meets left.

“We have two more tournaments until state,” he said. “Because of limits at Rawlins the week following Worland, this will be the last tournament of the season our entire team will compete together.”

The competition in Worland will be bittersweet since it is the last time this year the entire team will compete together. The team will continue to practice to prepare for the upcoming tournaments.
