Indoor track team competes at Weber State invitational

The Green River High School Girls and Boys Indoor Track team traveled to Ogden, Utah, last week to Weber State University for its 26th Annual Weber State University Developmental Indoor Track and Field Meet. Friday, the meet started with field events.

Participating in the shot put, the Lady Wolves were led by senior Kim Peterson, whom head coach Dan Hansen said has been moving up the ladder this season. Peterson was the top finisher and only Lady Wolf to make the finals, finishing eighth with a throw of 28.03.25. She was followed closely by teammates Alaina Maiers in 11th at 27:08.28, Cassidy Gomez in 12th, at 27:08 and Alexis Martin in 20th at 26:04.50. The marks give the Lady Wolves a potentially strong contingent of throwers for the outdoor season with continued improvement in the next six weeks.

The boys were led in shot put by senior David Martinez, who finished 21st in the field of 63 with a throw of 37.07.25. Teammate Ty Alcorn took 52nd at 29.07.50. Saturday, the running events began with the girls 55-meter hurdles. Leading the way for the Lady Wolves was freshman Lillian Munoz, who took 18th in the field of 42 with a time of 10.19. The boys had one entrant, Jarrett Atkins, who finished 20th out of 32 hurdlers with a time of 9.44.

In the 55-meter dash, freshman Ellie Kettering finished in 40th place out of 100 sprinters in 8.24, with teammate Rachel Foster taking 51st in 8.34. For the boys in the 55-meter dash, sophomore Marcos Molina, back for the first time since the last outdoor season, took 17th in the large field of 108 sprinters in 7.08. Four teammates followed with Josh Cudney taking 45th in 7.42, Jarrett Atkins 65th in 7.57, Domenick Kunkle 86th in 7.83 and freshman Alex Hlad in 94th in 7.99. Senior Kaisa Arnell is beginning to hit her stride in the distance races according to Hansen. The Lady Wolves’ lone entrant in the 3,200-meter run, she finished 17th in the field of 34 in 13.18.99. For the boys, in a field of 62 runners, senior Marcos Valerio finished in 20th place ahead of two-thirds of the field in 10:40.50, followed by three sophomore team mates led by Greg Sherwin in 44th in 11:47.46, Kaden Gailey 61st in 13.13.85 and Evin Hansen in 62nd place in 13:16.60. Hansen said Valerio was somewhat ill during the competition.

The girls had one entrant in the 400-meter run as freshman Madison Yoak took 30th in the field of 46 in 1:10.49. The boys also had young competitors in their 400-meter race as Hlad took 51st in the field of 59 runners in 1:05.45, followed by Jared Westenskow in 59th in 1:14.04. The girls had two runners in the 800 meters with junior Carly Kettering finishing 28th in the field of 57 runners, followed by Yoak in 34th in 2:51.10. The boys were led by freshman Adam Robinson in the 800 taking 77th in the field of 82 at 2:50.13 followed by Westenskow in 78th in 2:50.29.

In the girls 200-meter dash, two freshman led the way with E. Kettering finishing 22nd in the field of 92 sprinters in 29.20, followed closely by Munoz in 29.32 with junior Rachel Foster taking 43rd in 30.62. The boys were led by Molina in 14th in the large field of 108 sprinters with a time of 24.91, followed by Cudney in 61st in 26.70, Atkins at 73rd in 27.23, Domenick Kunkle 91st in 28.92 and freshman and Alex Atkinson in 100th in 30.53. There was only one entrant for the girls in the 1,600-meter run with Kaisa Arnell taking 23rd out of 55 runners in a time of 6:12.80. The girls 4x400-meter relay team finished 3rd out of five teams entered, with the boys taking eighth out of the nine teams. Hansen was pleased with the progress of his performers, particularly noting that the young kids are coming along nicely.

The Wolves will travel to Natrona this week, before some members participate Feb. 14-15 in the prestigious Simplot Games.
