GRHS track team competes in Vernal meet

Valerio takes 1st in the 3,200 meters

Due to a 30-degree, windy, wet forecast for the Kelly Walsh Invitational, track coach Dan Hansen rescheduled a meet for Friday to Vernal, Utah and 60-degree weather, with calm winds and only a soft rain.

Among the Wyoming schools that competed in Vernal were Big Piney, Rock Springs, Pinedale, and Little Snake River along with several schools from Utah including Rich High, Carbon, Pinnacle, Tabonia, Maser Prep Academy and Altamont High Schools.

Those scoring team points, by finishing in the top eight, for the Lady Wolves were Mariyah Brady, who took third in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.83, Lauren Hoyt took sixth in the 100-meter Dash in 13.61, Sydney Hosford took fourth in the 3,200-meter run in 14:00.71 and Cassidy Gomez finished in sixth in the shot put at 30’.06.50.

Those performances help led the way to an 11th place year finish out of 16 teams.

Those scoring team points on the boys’ side included Chance Hofer taking third in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.22, Marcos Valerio finishing fourth in the 1600-meter run in 4:49.87 as well as taking the only first-place finish for the Wolves, winning the 3,200-meter run in 10:54.74.

Kyle Cacho scored points in three events, finishing fourth with a 51.64 time in the 400-meter run, taking fifth in the 200-meters in 23.88, as well as with a second place in the long jump with 21’06”. Cole White took seventh in the 400-meters with a time 52.89.

In the throws for the boys, Nick Boldt scored points in both his events, taking third in the shot put at 44’9.50” and second in the discus at 127’.04”.

Hansen was pleased with his teams’ efforts, given the poor meet and practice conditions the team has endured so far this season.

The next meet is a big in-state meet for the team. The Okie Invitational is Thursday in Cheyenne.
