Notes from Town Square: Enjoy local UW competition

Winter is really sinking in and the temperatures are getting colder.

You have the post Thanksgiving blues and are wondering what

you can do with your family this weekend? Sure, you could drive down to Laramie to watch Wyoming play in its first Mountain West Conference football game against San Diego State, perhaps you can do a double header and watch Cowboy basketball host the University of

Northern Iowa Panthers at 11 a.m., but good luck getting a hotel. Why not do a “triple header” and listen to the basketball game, watch the Mountain West championship later on TV and stay local and enjoy some great collegiate action that is fast and exciting sandwiched between these two?

Green River once again has the opportunity to host “Duel in the Pool” at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Green River High School Aquatic Center.

This is an NCAA Division 1 swim meet between the men from the University of Wyoming and the University of Utah.Green River hosted this

event in 2015 and had a great turnout.

“Green River has an amazing facility, and it’s a really fast pool. The men swam so fast there last year. The people there are very hospitable and they take care of us, and I know they’re excited to have us race there,” UW head coach Tom Johnson said.

So far, it looks like UW has had a winning streak when using our

facility. The last time these two teams met was in 2015 and the Utes fell short against the Cowboys by a score of 173-127. The University of Wyoming Swim and Dive teams were here again on Nov. 5, 2016, and both

the men’s and women ‘s teams beat out Colorado Mesa.

This should be another great competition as both teams are currently ranked in the top 40 in the country for Division 1 teams with the Utah men’s team ranked 15th and Wyoming is 33rd.

This event is free, open to the public, and it will be warm inside. I hope you’ll come out, show your support and make it a Wyoming triple header.
